Position: Truck Dispatcher (remote, on-call as needed)
Location: Houston, TX (company based here — dispatcher may work hybrid on-site/remotely)
Compensation: 4 % of gross load amount
What We’re Looking For: Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of experience dispatching dry-van (OTR / long-haul) trucks.
- Proven track record of booking loads from load boards and/or broker networks.
- Experience negotiating rates with brokers/shippers to secure profitable loads.
- Strong knowledge of compliance, including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rules — especially Hours-of-Service (HOS), ELD regulations, load securement, and general safety standards.
- Proficiency with dispatching software / Transportation Management System (TMS) or equivalent record-keeping tools; ability to manage paperwork (rate confirmations, bills of lading (BOL), load photos, etc.).
- Strong organizational, communication (phone/email), multitasking, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to stay calm under pressure, adapt to changing conditions (traffic, weather, delays), and make decisions quickly.
- High school diploma or GED (or equivalent). Additional training, certifications or experience in logistics/fleet management is a plus.
- Must be reachable (phone/email) for drivers and brokers — able to respond to broker and driver calls promptly.
- Willingness to work “on call” when needed (including nights / weekends), given long-haul schedules and occasional urgencies.
- Self-motivated, reliable, detail-oriented, with good work ethics and integrity (especially when handling documentation and rate negotiations).
Nice-to-have / Preferred
- Certification in dispatching or freight management (e.g., National Dispatch & Freight Certification Association — NDFCA).
- Familiarity with load boards / broker networks such as DAT Solutions, TruckStop, etc.
- Basic understanding of maintenance/repair logistics: able to coordinate with drivers for breakdowns or routine maintenance, and liaise with shops or service providers if needed.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Use load boards and broker contacts to find, evaluate, and book loads that match our fleet (3 dry-van trucks) and routes.
- Negotiate rates with brokers or shippers to maximize profit — but always keeping credibility and broker relationships in mind (credit checks, trustworthy brokers).
- Assign loads to drivers (4 drivers, 3 trucks) — coordinate schedules to ensure trucks stay rolling efficiently, minimize deadhead miles, and manage driver home time/rest periods.
- Monitor driver Hours-of-Service (HOS) and ELD logs to ensure full compliance. If drivers are nearing limits, reassign loads, plan rest breaks or accept layovers accordingly.
- Prepare and review all paperwork: rate confirmations, bills of lading (BOL), load photos/condition reports, delivery confirmations, etc. Ensure documentation is correct, complete, properly stored and uploaded to factoring / TMS.
- Credit-check and vet brokers/shippers before booking loads — make sure they are legit and payment terms acceptable.
- Maintain accurate records of all dispatches, routes, driver assignments, deliveries, and communications.
- Act as primary contact for drivers: handle communication, give instructions, relay changes; also troubleshoot any problems — e.g., mechanical issues, delays, reroutes, emergencies, breakdowns, etc.
- Manage maintenance and repair scheduling: coordinate with drivers and service providers, track maintenance logs, schedule downtime/as needed repairs to minimize disruption.
- Be responsive and available — remote work is okay, but must be reachable by phone/email at all times; be ready to handle broker & driver calls even on weekends or outside standard hours.
- Help improve operations: suggest route optimizations, better load patterns, reduce deadhead, increase efficiency, and maintain high on-time delivery rates.
- Candidates with no load booking through load-boards experiences will not be considered!
What the Right Candidate Looks Like
You are experienced in long-haul dry-van dispatching. You know how to secure loads from load boards or broker networks, negotiate good rates, and ensure that everything — from documentation to driver logs — is compliant and properly handled. You’re organized and detail-oriented, but also flexible and ready to handle emergencies or last-minute changes. You communicate clearly, both via phone and email. You take pride in helping drivers stay rolling smoothly, safely, and profitably.
You understand that with 3 trucks and 4 drivers, a dispatcher needs to juggle schedules carefully, and always have a backup plan — especially given long-haul distances and OTR freight.
