ABOUT THE ACADEMY

The Montana Youth Challenge Academy (MYCA), operated under the Department of Military Affairs, provides a structured, academic, and life-skills-based program for youth ages 16 to 18 who are seeking to make positive changes in their lives. The program runs two 22-week residential sessions per year, serving approximately 110 Cadets in each session.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Tutor supports the academic success of Cadets by providing individualized and small-group instruction in core subjects, including Math, English, Science, and Social Studies. This position plays an important role in helping students strengthen foundational knowledge, complete coursework, and achieve academic goals during their time at MYCA.

Tutors work under the direction of the Lead Teacher and collaborate with instructional staff to create a positive, supportive learning environment that encourages motivation, respect, and persistence.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide academic tutoring in assigned subject areas to individual Cadets or small groups.
  • Assist students in developing study skills, test preparation strategies, and independent learning habits.
  • Communicate regularly with the Lead Teacher regarding student progress and learning needs.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of tutoring sessions and attendance.
  • Support MYCA’s mission by modeling professionalism, consistency, and respect for diversity.
  • Participate in training or staff meetings as assigned.

SCHEDULE AND WORK EXPECTATIONS

  • Tutors are expected to work a minimum of three hours per week, with total weekly hours set by the Lead Teacher based on program needs and available funding.
  • This position is estimated to be 4-6 Hours of Work Weekly
  • This position may work up to 90 days per year.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of at least two (2) years of college coursework; and
  • Experience working with youth in an educational, mentoring, or similar support role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field; and
  • Experience teaching or tutoring in academic subjects.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening, background check, and motor vehicle record check.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
