Job Summary

Utah Reads employees tutor elementary school students who are reading below grade-level, working with children individually or in small groups. Tutors may also provide classroom help or assistance in after school programs.

Tutors are assigned to a specific site and work off-campus. We partner with six sites in the Salt Lake City School District:

  • Edison Elementary

  • Liberty Elementary

  • Mountain View Elementary

  • Newman Elementary

  • Nibley Park Elementary

  • Glendale-Mountain View Community Learning Center

Responsibilities

Complete required trainings and orientation : New tutors must complete orientation and trainings before they can begin work. Tutors are also expected to attend any meetings held at their site.

Transportation : Tutors must provide their own transportation to and from their assigned school site.

Scheduling : Tutors set their own regular weekly schedules within the available tutoring hours of the partnering site. Tutors must commit to work at least 4 hours per week on at least 2 days of the week and cannot exceed 19 hours per week.

Consistency : Consistent, ongoing support is crucial for the community partners Utah Reads works with. Tutors are asked to commit to working with Utah Reads for at least one school year, unless they are graduating mid-year.

Community Partnership : Tutors are expected to comply with all of the rules of their assigned school site. Conduct guidelines may include site rules, dress code, safety procedures, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be in good standing with the University of Utah, both academically and in conduct

  • Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA

  • Shows commitment to campus and community through involvement

  • Have current Federal Work-Study Award for the current school year
