The Unemployment Insurance (UI) Division is responsible for administering the state's UI program under the oversight of the United States Department of Labor (USDOL). This includes the collection of UI contributions/taxes from employers on a quarterly basis, and the distribution of unemployment compensation to New Mexicans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own and meet various eligibility requirements. The Division executes these functions via robust self-service web services, as well as through staff assisted services via the UI Operations Center.

Why does the job exist?
The Claims Adjudicator is responsible for providing and capturing claimant and employer information related to the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program for the State of New Mexico by way of providing technical assistance to internal and external customers while making determinations regarding benefits eligibility and employer liability. This position requires that duties are performed in a structured Operations Center environment that requires excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing. This position requires thorough knowledge of the Unemployment Insurance Federal and State regulations. This position must maintain professionalism by presenting a positive and pleasant image to the citizens of New Mexico while meeting the customer's needs both accurately and timely. This position must maintain confidential and sensitive information in the performance of duties.
How does it get done?
Position interviews claimants, employers, and other individuals to gather facts pertaining to claims being investigated. Position evaluates facts regarding job separations, availability for work, timely applications for unemployment benefits, job refusals, overpayments, wage reporting and tax rate determinations. Position explains provisions of NM Unemployment Insurance Law/Regulations to claimants and employers. Position may determine customer eligibility based on the New Mexico Unemployment Insurance Laws as well as employer liability. Determine employer liability, non-liability, and distinguish between total and partial history transfer, consolidation for employer. Position performs advanced level duties that requires a thorough understanding of the unemployment insurance program. Requires an extensive knowledge of business practices and overall Department mission.

Minimum Qualification
Associate degree in Business Administration and one (1) year of claims adjustment and/or investigative experience preferably in the insurance profession. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling three (3) years may substitute for the required education and experience. For positions in the Unemployment Insurance (UI) Operations Center at the Department of Workforce Solutions: Any additional call center customer service experience in claims taking and/or processing (UI preferably), eligibility determination, identifying, troubleshooting and resolving customer complaints, and ensuring compliance will substitute for the education and experience.

Working Conditions
This position is located in the Unemployment Insurance (UI) Operations inbound call center. Work is performed in an open-floor call center environment with regular exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminals (VDT). The position requires extensive sitting with use of a personal computer with repetitive typing, telephone use and moderate noise levels.
