Job Summary

The Police Officer is a currently licensed Texas Peace Officer responsible for the protection of life and property, enforcement of federal, state, and local laws, and the overall safety and security of the Wiley University community. This position requires sound judgment, professionalism, and the ability to respond effectively to routine, critical, and emergency situations.

The Police Officer operates under the direct supervision of the Chief of Police and will ultimately report through the chain of command to the Police Captain as the department structure expands. This position provides leadership and oversight to Public Safety Officers and plays a key role in fostering a safe, professional, and community-oriented campus environment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Law Enforcement & Public Safety

  • Enforce all applicable federal, state, and local laws including but not limited the Texas Penal Code and Texas Transportation Code
  • Patrol campus grounds, buildings, and surrounding areas to prevent and detect criminal activity
  • Conduct investigations, respond to incidents, and make lawful arrests when violations occur
  • Prepare detailed reports and maintain accurate records of all incidents and enforcement actions
  • Respond to emergencies, provide first aid, and coordinate with external law enforcement and emergency services when necessary
  • Report violations, misconduct, and safety concerns in accordance with department policy and university standards

University Compliance & Community Standards

  • Maintain working knowledge of the Wiley University Employee Handbook and Student Code of Conduct
  • Enforce university policies and address violations in alignment with institutional procedures
  • Collaborate with university administration, faculty, and staff to promote a safe campus environment
  • Support Clery Act compliance, incident reporting, and campus safety initiatives

Supervision & Leadership

  • Provide oversight and direction to Public Safety Officers (PSOs) during assigned shifts
  • Ensure PSOs are performing duties in accordance with department policies and professional standards
  • Serve as a leadership presence on campus and assist in training and mentoring personnel
  • Support the development of a structured and accountable Public Safety Department

Training & Professional Development

  • Actively participate in training events with:
    • Wiley University community members
    • Public Safety Officers
    • Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies
  • Maintain all required certifications and continuing education in accordance with TCOLE standards
  • Contribute to departmental training initiatives and community engagement programs

Technology & Administrative Functions

  • Utilize department systems and technology for reporting, communication, and data management
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including:
    • Excel
    • PowerPoint
    • Word
  • Maintain communication via radio, phone, and digital systems
  • Complete administrative duties, reports, and documentation in a timely and professional manner

Operational Expectations

  • Work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Maintain consistent availability for emergency response and operational needs
  • Exercise independent judgment while adhering to department policy and chain of command
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical conduct at all times

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a licensed Peace Officer in the State of Texas (TCOLE certified) at time of application
  • Minimum age of 21 years
  • High school diploma or GED (Associate’s or higher preferred)
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Ability to meet all department physical and psychological standards

Background Requirements

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation with no evidence of:

  • Felony convictions
  • Class B misdemeanor convictions (or higher) within the last 10 years
  • Family violence convictions
  • DWI/DUI convictions within the last 10 years

Employment is contingent upon a candidate's successful criminal background investigation results that provide no evidence of the following:
a. Felony convictions
b. Class B misdemeanor convictions or court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offences above the grade of class B within the last ten (10) years
c. Convictions, probations, or deferred dispositions for family violence
d. DWI/DUI convictions within the last ten (10) years

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma Required
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field, preferred
  • Prior experience in campus law enforcement or public safety environment
  • Supervisory or leadership experience
