Senior Tax and Accounting Assistant
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Accounting Assistant works directly with the Managers and is responsible for managing the Accounting Assistants in bookkeeping, accounting, tax returns, and other special tasks. Duties include reviewing the work of Accounting Assistants, providing feedback and additional training as needed, and research for special projects that arise.
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
- Ensures financial data is entered correctly and accurately
- Enters journal entries to debit and credit company accounts; posts journal entries to general ledger
- Generates accounting and audit reports for cash receipts, accounts payable and receivable, expenditures, and profits and losses
- Generates summary sheets to be used by supervisor or auditor
- Use appropriate accounting software
- Reviews and manages the work product of other team members to confirm completion and accuracy
- Lead and participate in internal meetings and complete required training
- Lead tax preparation, planning, and filing processes.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state tax laws.
- Manage tax-related queries and notices.
- Mentor junior tax assistants and support tax audits.
- Records numerical and financial data to produce financial records
- Reconciles and reports differences or issues found in financial records
- Consult with clients to develop a basic understanding of their financial affairs and the scope of their tax liabilities
- Review previous tax returns and financial documents to identify missing or incomplete information or documentation
- Review all supplied financial information for accuracy
- Calculate taxes owed or refunds due to client; consults tax law publications for guidance on unusual situations
- Submit tax returns to accountant for review
- File tax returns for clients
- Reviews the work product of other team members to confirm completion and accuracy
- Attend and participate in internal meetings and complete required training
- Performs other related duties as assigned by management
KEY COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge of general financial accounting and cost accounting
- Understanding of and ability to adhere to GAAP
- Strong computer skills and knowledge of QuickBooks Online and MS Office
- Ability to meet deadlines and problem solve
- Ability to lead a team with guidance
- Strong client service along with the ability to develop excellent client relationships
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Analytical skills with detail orientation
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- BA in Accounting
- 5 years of US accounting and tax experience
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to spend prolonged periods of time sitting at a desk using a computer
