UTILITY MAINTENANCE CREW LEADER

DESCRIPTION

Lead and participate in the work of a crew engaged in the construction, repair, and maintenance of the Utility system.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Prioritize, assign, lead, review and participate in the work of subordinate employees.
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance and repairs on the City's Utility systems in all weather conditions.
  • Utilize a variety of complex equipment and monitoring techniques to locate lines, investigate issues and determine the cause of problems.
  • Inspect equipment before and after use, perform maintenance activities, and report exceptional problems to the supervisor.
  • Perform and recommend cost-effective repair, maintenance, and installation methods of utility lines.
  • Install and maintain meters.
  • Install and/or repair barricades, parking bumpers, and guard rails.
  • Install new utility service connections.
  • Lead workers at the job site as directed by the Supervisor; prepare daily activity logs.
  • Confer with customers regarding service problems and report feedback to the Supervisor.
  • Assist in the purchasing of supplies and equipment.
  • Monitor the shoring of trenches and confined workspaces.
  • Maintain accurate records. Document and track work orders and repairs.
  • Oversee the detection of buried utility lines when Equipment Operators are digging.
  • Assist supervisor in assessing the crew's needs to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Provide on-the-job training instruction or recommend training to new crew members.
  • Monitor and evaluate quality, responsiveness, efficiency and effectiveness of assigned field operations methods and procedures.
  • Participate in monitoring work area to ensure a safe working environment. Follow safety guidelines established by the assigned department.
  • Conduct weekly safety meetings.
  • Prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

High school or GED, plus 3 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Basic: Word Processing/Typing
Must possess a valid Class B CDL license when hired.
Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check, and MVR check.
Minimum Class C and D/II equivalent TCEQ for Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection. Examples: Class C Water Distribution and Class I Collections. Class D Water and Class II or above Collection.
Ability to obtain C equivalents in Water and Wastewater within 12 months after accepting the position.
Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.

Regularly use complex machines and equipment (desktop/laptop computer and software, road construction, water distribution, wastewater collection machines and equipment, driver's license/CDL, etc.)
