SUMMARY:

The Utility Maintenance Technician maintains and operates a variety of equipment used in the constructions, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of public utility systems, including water, sewer, and storm drainage facilities and systems. This position is subject to on-call rotation including emergency call outs, position will check and inspect lift stations when on call.

Supervision:

Reports to: Division Supervisor; position will not have direct supervision over other staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

HS Diploma/GED, and related experience in manual labor and operating equipment.

License and Certifications:

Valid Texas Driver's license. Ability to obtain a Class D water license within 12 months of hire.

Preferred Class A CDL license.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Operates equipment, power tools and shovels as needed

· Transports and operates a variety of light, medium and heavy-duty equipment such as backhoe, dump trucks, and VacTron involved in the maintenance and repair of utility systems.

· Operates a backhoe for excavating utility trenches, placing pipe and backfilling.

· Performs heavy and semi-skilled construction maintenance and labor work when not operating equipment regularly assigned.

· Maintains the safe working condition of all equipment used.

· Performs after-hours emergency work and on-call duties on a rotating basis.

· Maintains TCEQ certification and CDL license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

· Knowledge in the mechanical operation of light equipment, common tools, materials, and methods used in maintenance and construction work.

· Knowledge and understanding of safety precautions while working in and around traffic.

· Knowledge of using safe and effective operating practices in accordance with City and State safety policies and procedures.

· Skill in making minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and tools.

· Skill in transporting equipment and tools to work sites.

· Skill in safely lifting, pulling, and pushing materials and equipment.

· Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time while working on/or around hot asphalt.

· Ability to understand verbal and written instructions.

In a typical work setting, Utility Maintenance Technician I/II will:

Interpersonal Relationships

Consistently works with other team members in close proximity and interacts daily with office staff.

Hours/Travel

Usually works a standard 40-hour week, 5 days per week but may be required to work evenings or weekends to meet deadlines or for special projects/assignments. This position includes on-call responsibilities on a rotational basis.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

Requires physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job. This position will involve some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Works in indoor and outdoor conditions, in seasonal and weather conditions; drives a vehicle; subject to emergency situations.

May lift and move boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.

Disaster Service Workers Clause

Always in the event of a declared emergency or any undeclared emergency or natural disaster that threatens the life, health and/or safety of the public, designated employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers. Such assignments may be in locations, during hours and performing work significantly different from the employees’ normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency.
