Salary Range: $20 - $23 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Veterinary Technician in a clinic setting plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional customer service, providing client education, and offering compassionate care for animals. This position is focused on promoting spay/neuter programs and preventive healthcare for public pets. We are seeking a dependable, proactive, and adaptable individual who thrives both independently and as part of a team. Strong communication skills are essential, as this role involves working closely with clients in a variety of situations. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of one year of veterinary technician experience and a strong background in customer service, particularly in roles requiring positive and professional interpersonal interactions. Success in this position requires the ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining composure under pressure.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Animal Care & Medical Procedures:
- Perform basic physical exams, including recording temperature, heart rate, and respiration.
- Administer medications via IM, SQ, and IV routes.
- Prepare and administer core and elective vaccines (Leukemia, FVRCP, DA2PP, Bordetella, Leptospirosis).
- Perform proper, humane restraint techniques for both dogs and cats.
- Collect blood samples from appropriate sites (femoral, cephalic, jugular in felines; cephalic, jugular, saphenous in canines).
- Conduct diagnostic tests including Heartworm, and SNAP Triple Feline Combo.
- Collect and process fecal samples for flotation and direct smear; interpret results accurately.
- Perform ear cleanings (simple and deep), and nail trims.
- Scan and, if needed, aseptically insert microchips.
- Accurately calculate, prepare, and label take-home medications.
Client Interaction & Education:
- Communicate clearly with clients in person and over the phone; maintain a friendly, professional demeanor.
- Educate pet owners on the importance of vaccinations, spay/neuter, infectious diseases, and preventive care.
- Provide compassionate support in sensitive situations, such as pet end-of-life decisions.
- Check in/out surgical patients and provide thorough post-operative care instructions.
- Assist the public with basic health care information and explain treatments or procedures when necessary.
Administrative & Operational Support:
- Accurately enter medical records into the designated software in a timely manner.
- Maintain inventory of supplies, drugs, and equipment; restock as needed.
- Follow all policies and procedures as outlined by the Humane Society of Greater Miami and the Medical Protocol Manual; report any inconsistencies or needed updates to supervisors.
- Provide support during special events or in other areas as needed (e.g., front desk, phone support).
- Report safety hazards or misuse of equipment immediately to a supervisor.

- Uphold the mission and values of the Humane Society of Greater Miami by treating all animals and individuals with respect, compassion, and care.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certification as a Veterinary Technician preferred; however, candidates with relevant veterinary technician experience and a high school diploma or GED will also be considered.
- At least one year of veterinary technician experience is required.
- Proficient in performing drug dosage calculations and accurate data entry.
- Skilled in the safe, humane handling and care of animals, including cats and large or untrained dogs.
- Strong multitasking abilities with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact tactfully, compassionately, and diplomatically with clients and their families.
- Valid Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to quickly learn and adapt to new software systems is preferred.
- Bilingual: English and Spanish preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Lifting and carrying animals and equipment over 50 pounds.
- Walking, standing, sitting for prolonged periods depending on the task.
- Frequent reaching, bending, kneeling, squatting, and stooping to care for animals and clean areas.
- Ability to work in environments that may involve handling animals, dealing with various animal medical conditions, and exposure to animal-related hazards.
- Must not be allergic to domestic animals or cleaning products due to the nature of the work environment.
