Veterinary Intake Technician- Animal Shelter
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Veterinary Services, the Veterinary Intake Technician provides primary intake assessments and preventive care for animals entering the shelter. This role supports the veterinary team with clinical tasks, patient care, and medical record management to ensure efficient daily medical and surgical operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Animal Intake & Medical Care
- Prioritize and manage animal intake appointments according to the shelter intake schedule
- Perform safe triage evaluations and administer vaccines during intake following Rescue Village protocols
- Obtain accurate history when available and conduct intake exams to assess animals medically and behaviorally
- Administer vaccines, microchips, oral medications, heartworm prevention, and topical flea/tick products under veterinary supervision
- Assist with routine evaluations of animals in foster care and provide revaccinations when needed
- Support veterinarians to ensure continuity of care for animals in the shelter and foster system
Diagnostics & Medical Records
- Collect samples and perform in-clinic diagnostic tests including ringworm screening, fecal tests, heartworm tests, and FeLV/FIV tests
- Accurately document exam findings and maintain up-to-date patient records in ShelterLuv software
- Perform data entry to support accurate and complete medical records
Clinic Operations
- Assist with daily clinic operations including surgical instrument preparation, equipment maintenance, laundry, feeding, and patient care
- Support Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program operations including patient check-in, monitoring, and discharge
- Maintain inventory of intake supplies and notify the Clinic Manager when items need to be ordered
- Follow shelter cleaning, sanitation, and disease control protocols
Animal Handling & Team Collaboration
- Use proper Fear Free animal handling techniques while prioritizing human and animal safety
- Work collaboratively with veterinary staff, shelter departments, and the public in a professional and respectful manner
- Represent Rescue Village professionally at all times
- Refer clients to appropriate staff members when needed
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Veterinary Services or Executive Director
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Veterinary assistant or veterinary technician experience required; animal shelter experience is preferred
- Experience maintaining medical records and using veterinary medical terminology
- Basic computer skills (Windows-based systems)

Other Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with assistance
- Ability to stand, walk, bend and perform physical tasks throughout the shift
- Comfortable working in an active shelter environment with animals, noise and odors
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
