Position Title: Veterinary Technician

Classification: Non-exempt (hourly)]

Reports To: Medical Manager

Pay Range: $20 - $23 per hour

The Humane Society of Greater Miami is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of animals in need. POSITION SUMMARY:

The Veterinary Technician will provide high-quality health care to animals, ensuring their health and well-being throughout the intake, treatment, and adoption process. This position involves working closely with veterinarians, staff members, and volunteers to deliver medical treatment, monitor animal health, and assist in maintaining medical records.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Examine patients and assign medication according to the examination findings, under the guidance of staff veterinarian(s).
  • Provides routine and minor health care for animals housed at the facility, under the guidance of the staff veterinarian(s).
  • Operates under the guidelines of the Medical Staff Protocol and Procedures.
  • Observes/examines animals for signs of illness or injury.
  • Accurate and timely recording of medical findings in current software (currently PetPoint).
  • Ensures that each animal’s medical record is up-to-date and complete.
  • Routinely vaccinate and check for internal parasites of animals in care.
  • Ensures that daily treatments are done as prescribed, monitors the progress of the treatment, and brings up any condition in need of rechecking to the staff veterinarian.
  • Proficiently perform the following medical duties for cats and dogs: Basic physical exams; Venipuncture and IV catheter placement; SNAP Parvo, Giardia, Canine Heartworm, and Feline Triple SNAP test; Drug calculations and data entry; administer sub-cutaneous and IV fluids.
  • Collect, set up, and interpret: Urinalysis, fecal flotation, ear cytology, ear mite test, blood smear, skin scrape, DTM cultures, etc.
  • Perform ear cleaning and pedicure.
  • Handle, store, and process lab specimens (blood, urine, feces, tissue samples, etc.).
  • Order lab tests and collect samples for PCR testing (Respiratory, ringworm etc.).
  • Assists in the determination of adoptability and recommends appropriate care for animals.
  • Ensures and maintains appropriate inventory of all necessary supplies, drugs and equipment throughout medical areas. Stock supplies and notify Lead Veterinary Technician (or designated staff) when stock is low.
  • Collaborate effectively and professionally with all staff members, including those in the clinic, animal care, veterinary, and customer service departments.
  • Assist adoption counselors to explain medical records and treatments of animals that have exceptional medical considerations.
  • Fill in at other areas and perform other tasks/functions as needed, including occasionally assisting in the clinic.
  • Treat all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion always, regardless of the situation or circumstance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of one year of experience working in veterinary clinic or similar environment.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in caring for and handling animals (cats as well as large and possibly untrained dogs) in a safe, effective, and humane manner.
  • Skilled in the safe, humane handling and care of animals, including cats and large or untrained dogs.
  • Strong multitasking abilities with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact tactfully, compassionately, and diplomatically with clients and their families.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to quickly learn and adapt to new software systems is preferred.
  • Bilingual: English and Spanish preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Lifting and carrying animals and equipment over 50 pounds.
  • Walking, standing, sitting for prolonged periods depending on the task.
  • Frequent reaching, bending, kneeling, squatting, and stooping to care for animals and clean areas.
  • Ability to work in environments that may involve handling animals, dealing with various animal medical conditions, and exposure to animal-related hazards.
  • Must not be allergic to domestic animals or cleaning products due to the nature of the work environment.
