Position Summary

Ohio Crime Victim Justice Center is dedicated to providing free legal representation and advocacy services to crime victims during the criminal justice process, including surviving family members and victims’ representatives. In addition, Ohio Crime Victim Justice Center provides free victims’ rights training to nurses, counselors, advocates, law enforcement, prosecutors, other attorneys, courts, and the community.

This position will primarily be responsible for providing advocacy to crime victims from the time of first report through post release control, linking crime victims to available services to ensure a continuum of care, assisting with the compensation fund, evaluating crime victims’ rights violations, obtaining necessary documentation for representation, and attending criminal justice meetings and court proceedings, as needed.

This position will also require familiarity with and ability to utilize an online resource developed by this organization that is designed to assist crime victims in educating themselves on their rights and enforcing their rights.

Secondary responsibilities include engaging the community through social media and direct outreach to educate the community, victim service providers, and criminal justice system officials about crime victims’ rights and services provided by Ohio Crime Victim Justice Center, referring clients to Ohio Crime Victim Justice Center, providing trainings as described below, and soliciting and managing volunteers, as needed.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial case intake and needs assessment;
  • Assist victims and family members by informing and linking crime victims to state, federal and/or community services as needed, assist with safety planning, assist with compensation claims, and access to victims’ rights toolkit;
  • Conduct initial evaluation of complaints of victims’ rights violations and present to supervising attorney;
  • Acquire case specific documentation;
  • Accompany clients to court proceedings, when needed;
  • Participate in community outreach activities, including targeted outreach to communities of color and other underserved communities;
  • Serve as an active member of a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and other victim service collaborations, as identified;
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with hospitals, advocates, police departments, prosecutors, and court personnel;
  • Co-present victims’ rights trainings for state and national audiences;
  • Contribute to social media and direct outreach efforts in assigned region;
  • Assist with recruitment and management of volunteers in assigned region; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising attorney, Legal Director and/or Executive Director.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree with two (2) years of experience in related field or five (5) years of work experience in related field preferred. Foreign language proficiency is preferred. Must have demonstrated ability in effective communication and organizational skills, case management, and computer skills. A dependable automobile is required as the applicant will travel throughout their assigned region.

Hours & Location of Work

This is a full-time (40 hours a week) hybrid work position. Ohio Crime Victim Justice Center is seeking to hire in southwest Ohio.

Compensation Hourly Rate

Commensurate with experience with a range between $40,000-$44,000 annually, with simple IRA and generous health, dental, and vision benefits, as well as vacation, sick, and personal leave.
