Job Description



Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

In consultation with the Director of Marketing and College Relations, the College Visual Designer supervises all internal publication services for the College, both academic and non-academic and other college and retention materials. They provide technical knowledge of printing or digital reproductions in conferring with and assessing customer needs, making recommendations, and writing job specifications to have work produced within the College or from an external vendor.

The College Visual Designer provides primary leadership in developing various creative solutions for the College and coordinating the development and design of a wide range of electronic and/or printed Visual materials, involving a variety of integrated steps and processes, and requiring extensive knowledge of specialized, multi-faceted design concepts and media.

The College Visual Designer provides expertise toward image building and actively monitors and enforces the Visual Identity Guidelines while continually performing routine responsibilities of Visual design for directional and decorative signs, posters, flyers, flags, and assisting College personnel who use the Canva design system and other related applications. The College Visual Designer creates complex, original Visual design and comprehensive layout concepts, and oversees and coordinates production of materials, where needed and as necessary. May lead and guide the work of Visual designers, work study students, and contractors. Responsible for the design and production of special publications such as the Annual Report, College Catalog, and other major design projects as needed. The College Visual Designer is also responsible for creating guidelines for how the brand is presented in different media outlets, ensuring consistency across digital ads, press releases, and social media campaigns to maintain a unified brand voice. This also includes defining the use of logos, fonts, color schemes, and imagery for digital, print, and merchandise applications. The College Visual Designer regularly represents the Marketing and College Relations Office in functions and meetings across campus. The College Visual Designer may be called on for other duties as assigned, including assisting and coordinating video production, photo shoots, and related projects or activities.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Considerable demonstrated experience managing Visual design projects of all scales from start to finish.
  • Considerable demonstrated work-related or on-the-job experience in design — both online and in print.
  • Considerable demonstrated and understanding of WordPress, website best practices, and UX and web design basics
  • Basic knowledge of SEO for websites and ADA compliance policies
  • Demonstrated related experience with design best practices, including examples of flyers, posters, banners, catalogs (and related publications), online and TV Visuals, email, and other electronic-only projects.


Knowledge
  • Thorough knowledge of best practices for Visual arts and design
  • Thorough knowledge of industry standard equipment: Mac OS-based computers, PCs, iPads and related tablets, scanners, desktop printers, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge on creating and troubleshooting PDF, PSD, AI, EPS and other Visual design formats
  • Understanding of web and user interface design
  • Proficiency with cameras and photography equipment
  • Understanding and knowledge of brand management and strategy

Skills
  • Proficient with standard Adobe Creative Cloud, Affinity, Microsoft Office other related software suites.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and work with individuals at all levels.
  • Attention to detail with a focus on thoroughness and quality.
  • Strong project management and planning skills with the ability to lead design projects across multiple teams.

Abilities
  • Ability to evaluate and improve design effectiveness based on analytics and stakeholder feedback.
  • Ability to present and explain design decisions.
