Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Volunteer Accountant to join our dynamic nonprofit organization. In this vital role, you will leverage your accounting expertise to support our mission-driven initiatives, ensuring accurate financial management and compliance. Duties

  • Manage and maintain the organization’s general ledger using accounting software such as QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage, ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded with proper debits and credits.
  • Prepare and interpret financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
  • Conduct bank reconciliations, account analysis, and account reconciliation processes to ensure accuracy across all financial accounts.
  • Assist with accounts payable and receivable processes, including invoice processing, payment scheduling, and vendor communications.
  • Support regulatory reporting requirements by ensuring compliance with local laws and nonprofit regulations; assist with audits and internal reviews.
  • Perform financial report writing and interpretation to aid management decision-making; contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning efforts.
  • Maintain meticulous records of journal entries, accruals, and other bookkeeping activities; ensure adherence to internal controls such as SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act) standards.
  • Provide mentorship and training to staff or volunteers on accounting procedures, software tools like PeopleSoft or QuickBooks, and best practices in nonprofit financial management.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting practices including LIHTC (Low-Income Housing Tax Credit) programs and governmental accounting standards.
  • Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, PeopleSoft or similar platforms; experience with financial software integration is a plus.
  • Deep understanding of GAAP principles combined with technical accounting expertise in areas like securities law, wills & trusts law, corporate finance, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with SOX compliance processes for internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data through financial analysis and cash flow analysis.
  • Skilled in financial report writing, presentation of financial statements, balance sheet reconciliation, bank reconciliation, and account analysis.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail for account reconciliation and double-entry bookkeeping tasks.
  • Ability to mentor others in accounting concepts such as accrual accounting, journal entries, accounts payable/receivable management, budgeting, forecasting, and general ledger reconciliation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting; familiarity with other tools like Quicken or private equity finance is advantageous.
