Position Objectives:

A Volunteer Firefighter responds to fires and other emergencies, operates necessary equipment and performs rescue operations. The position has no supervisory responsibilities. Works under supervision and guidance of paid personnel. Reports first to Volunteer Coordinators, then Captain/Shift Officers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position specific duties.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Maintain written truck log, equipment reports and other documentation as required.
Responds to medical, fire, rescue, and hazardous material incidents in an assigned vehicle.
Ventilate burning buildings by opening windows and skylights or cutting holes in roofs and floors.
Operate fire fighting apparatus including pumps, aerial ladders and auxiliary equipment, lay and connect hose, maneuver nozzles and direct force streams, raise and climb ladders, use bars, hooks, lines and other equipment.
Safely drive firefighting apparatus.
Perform rescue operations to remove persons trapped in burning buildings or other hazards.
Assist in performing emergency medical duties in response to medical emergency calls such as fires and auto accidents and give immediate treatment to distress victims using appropriate life saving techniques.
Assist with inspections of buildings throughout City for Fire Code conformance.
Cleans and maintains living quarters.
Attend training classes to learn job related techniques, methods and procedures.
Participate in inspecting, maintaining and performing minor repairs of equipment, vehicles and apparatus to ensure proper functioning.
Write reports and follow up on findings of inspections.
Shift Work, minimum 3 twelve-hour shifts per month, 4 hours training per month, plus attend department meetings. New hires may be required to attend a volunteer academy. Must attend at least 2 of the major public relations events per year.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of elementary methods, practices and techniques in fire prevention and control.
Ability to operate and maintain firefighting equipment and apparatus.
Knowledge and ability to administer emergency medical care at an EMT level.
Ability to analyze and interpret information then quickly and accurately make decisions based on S.O.P. guidelines.
Knowledge of safety rules and policies.
Ability to maintain composure under extremely stressful situations.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:

Firefighting apparatus including: fire hoses, nozzles and appliances, axes, hydraulic jacks, sprinkler stops, SCBAs, shovels, wrenches, wyes, forcible entry tools, fire extinguishers, exhaust fans, ropes, bolt cutters, hammers, ladders and other equipment specifically related to the fire service and technical rescue.

Minimum Requirements:
High School or G.E.D.
Certification as Colorado Firefighter I.
Certification as Colorado Emergency Medical Technician.
Certification as Colorado Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations Certified by time of appointment.
Certification of Colorado Firefighter II within one year of volunteering.
Certification Colorado EMT IV within one year of volunteering.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Colorado Drivers license.
Must have acceptable driving record according to City policy.
Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENTS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift 120 lbs., climb, crawl, run quickly, kneel, crouch, stoop and twist upper body. Must pass agility test. Also must pass post offer physical examination, work in adverse and dangerous conditions such as extreme heat and cold, extreme noise, confined work space, electrical hazards, vibrations, chemicals, toxic waste, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, smoke, fire, collapsing structures.
