Job Summary
The VRF Maintenance Technician is responsible for the specialized preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of complex Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF/VRV) systems. This role ensures all VRF equipment operates reliably, efficiently, and in compliance with manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Preventative Maintenance: Execute routine and preventative maintenance (PPM) schedules on all VRF indoor and outdoor units, heat recovery units, and refrigerant branch boxes.
- System Diagnostics: Utilize specialized manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools and software to identify and troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and control faults within the VRF network.
- Component Repair: Repair or replace critical VRF components, including inverter boards, variable speed compressors, Electronic Expansion Valves (EEVs), sensors, and communication wiring.
- Refrigerant Management: Accurately measure, recover, reclaim, and recharge VRF systems. Ensure precise refrigerant charge levels are maintained, which is critical for VRF system performance.
- System Integrity: Inspect and maintain complex refrigerant piping, branch joints (Refnet systems), and insulation to prevent leaks and ensure optimal flow.
- Controls: Calibrate and maintain VRF control systems, thermostats, centralized controllers, and integration with Building Management Systems (BMS).
- Documentation: Accurately document all service calls, maintenance reports, detailed fault descriptions, and parts inventory using the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies, particularly concerning high voltage electrical work and the safe handling and disposal of refrigerants.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education & Certification
- High School Diploma or GED is required; a Technical Diploma or Associate’s Degree in HVAC/R Technology is highly preferred.
- Valid Refrigerant Handling Certification (e.g., EPA Universal or equivalent regional certification).
- Manufacturer training certifications from major VRF brands (e.g., Daikin, Mitsubishi, LG, Samsung) are a significant advantage.
Experience
- Minimum of [3-5] years of progressive experience in HVAC service and maintenance.
- At least [2] years of dedicated, hands-on experience in the installation, servicing, and repair of large-scale VRF/VRV systems.
Technical Skills
- Advanced knowledge of VRF technology, including inverter operation, variable speed compressors, and complex control logic.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting detailed electrical schematics, piping diagrams, and technical specification manuals for VRF units.
- Familiarity with network communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, BACnet) used for VRF system integration.
- Strong electrical troubleshooting skills, including knowledge of low-voltage controls and high-voltage power circuits (up to 480V, depending on site).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in plant rooms, on rooftops, and in various climate conditions.
- Capable of lifting and manoeuvring heavy equipment (e.g., tools, parts).
- Must be willing to be on-call or work outside of standard business hours as required for emergency repairs.
