Warrant Clerk - Prosecuting Attorney's Office

Under the supervision of the Administrator/Prosecuting Attorney, produces criminal arrest warrants for police agencies in the County. Creates case files for the production of subpoenas and other court actions, and prepares misdemeanor OUIL ticket cases. Maintains data base of new laws and changes in current laws that affect warrant language. Responds to inquiries from assistant prosecutors, courts, police agencies and the general public.

Essential Functions

• Performs data entry from warrant requests and other documents to create case files for criminal cases. Generates warrants and secures signature of Assistant Prosecutor. Separates and distributes warrants to police agencies and to civilians on a walk-through basis. Provides instructions to civilians on how to proceed with the warrant and responds to inquiries about the process.
• Screens and prepares files for misdemeanor OUIL ticket cases, includes reviewing files for the necessary paperwork, conducting LEIN search of criminal history checking for priors, ensuring lab reports or breath test results are included or ordered, and ensuring supplemental notices are filed when necessary.
• Maintains and updates computer files on new laws or changes in laws which affect current charge language and/or create new charges and charge language. Updates office warrant manuals, including inputting new warrant language, indexing new charges, and reproducing and distributing new charges for office warrant manuals. Updates PAAM manual on a quarterly basis.
• Prepares and reviews fingerprint cards and sends back to agencies for corrections. Forwards fingerprint cards to Michigan State Police Central Records for entry to the AFIS System.
• Responds to inquiries on screening warrants, charges, general warrant production, court procedures for amending or re-issuing cases, and assisting in finding new charge language via PAAM manual. Responds to inquiries from police agencies and court personnel on warrant procedures, case status, case numbers, codes, and various other information. Responds to telephone calls from the general public regarding procedures, case status, and other general inquiries relating to status of warrants.
• May serve as back-up to the receptionist, switchboard operator, district court clerk, file clerk, or circuit clerk.

• Other duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications

Education: High school graduation, prefer some advanced college-level coursework in paralegal studies or related field.

Experience: A minimum of two years experience in a Prosecutor’s office or other legal setting providing familiarity with the judicial system. Knowledge of computer systems related to the Prosecutor’s system required.

Other Requirements: May be required to be a Certified Michigan State Police LEIN Operator.

Demonstrates effective communication skills by engaging, interacting and working with all individuals to ensure clarity and understanding in all interactions.

• The work environment is a cubicle/office setting. Employees in this job classification must regularly work with elevated levels of noise and activity levels.
