General Description. The Waste Management Internship at Hubbard Construction Company/Mid Florida Materials provides relevant field experience for junior or senior level Environmental Engineering students. Our internship program provides a realistic view of what it's like to work in Waste Management through meaningful, hands-on experiences. From coordinating schedules, to overseeing disposal site processes, our interns assume a wide variety of responsibilities during their time with Hubbard

Key Duties.

  • Operational Management: Overseeing daily waste collection, transfer, and disposal operations, including landfill management and recycling.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring all operations adhere to environmental regulations, safety standards, and permits.
  • Sustainability & Planning: Developing and implementing waste reduction, composting, and recycling programs to improve efficiency.
  • Community Relations: Addressing public concerns and promoting community outreach.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience. This is an internship.

  • Students must be enrolled in a college or university pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Environmental Science, Waste Management or a related field is required.
  • Understanding of environmental standards, waste management techniques and heavy equipment operation.
  • Must be able to understand and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.

Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Waste Management Intern to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Periodic physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day. Employee must be able to periodically stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Key Duties.
  • Ability to lift, on a frequent basis, at least 25 pounds personally and the ability to carry up to 15 pounds personally.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Continuous mental attention required to complete tasks in an efficient manner.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt grease and noise.
  • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes in varying weather conditions.

Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Waste Management Intern encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Work is performed indoors and/or outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a landfill.
  • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and ready mixed concrete.
