Job Description
Join Our Team – Waste Management Division, Public Works

The City of Chesapeake’s Waste Management Division is looking for dependable, self-motivated individuals who take pride in providing essential services to our community.
As a Waste Management Operator, you will:
  • Operate a Rear Loader Refuse Truck and oversee a small crew.
  • Safely manage truck mechanisms for compacting, loading, and dumping.
  • Assist your crew with heavy lifting (up to 75 pounds) throughout the day.
  • Perform daily pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections and basic operator maintenance.
  • Follow important written and verbal instructions to ensure efficient, reliable service.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires high school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Class B Commercial Driver’s License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
