Water Hygiene Technician
Key Responsibilities:
- Water System Maintenance:
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on water systems within the facility, including water tanks, piping, pumps, filtration systems, and mechanical systems.
- Conduct regular inspections of water systems to ensure proper functioning, hygiene, and cleanliness.
- Flush and disinfect water systems as part of water hygiene and maintenance procedures.
- Water Hygiene Control:
- Implement and manage water hygiene control measures to prevent contamination, Legionella bacteria growth, and other waterborne pathogens.
- Monitor water quality, including temperature, chlorine levels, pH, and other critical parameters to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
- Conduct risk assessments and surveys related to water systems, and provide solutions to mitigate potential health risks.
- System Cleaning & Disinfection:
- Carry out cleaning and disinfection of water systems and components to maintain water quality standards, including cooling towers, taps, showers, and water storage tanks.
- Prepare and use appropriate cleaning agents and chemicals in accordance with safety standards and protocols.
- Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure compliance with Water Hygiene Regulations, including guidelines on Legionella control and prevention, as outlined in HTM 04-01 or local standards.
- Keep up to date with changes in regulatory standards and implement necessary adjustments to practices and procedures.
- Complete and maintain accurate records of all water hygiene inspections, cleaning schedules, maintenance, and repairs.
- Troubleshooting & Issue Resolution:
- Identify and troubleshoot issues with water systems, including blockages, leaks, or any irregularities in water quality.
- Respond quickly to water-related emergencies, such as leaks, contamination, or system failures, ensuring minimal disruption to hospital operations.
- Collaboration & Reporting:
- Work closely with hospital facilities teams, maintenance personnel, and external contractors to ensure the efficient operation of water systems.
- Report on system performance and any significant issues to the management team, providing recommendations for system upgrades or improvements.
- Training & Awareness:
- Train and educate other staff members on water hygiene practices, system maintenance procedures, and health & safety protocols.
- Promote awareness of water hygiene issues and their impact on hospital operations, including infection control measures.
- Documentation & Record-Keeping:
- Keep detailed records of all water hygiene procedures, inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.
- Maintain accurate logs for Legionella testing, water sampling, cleaning schedules, and system monitoring.
Qualifications:
- Education & Experience:
- Minimum 3-year technical qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Water Hygiene, Environmental Health, or a related field (e.g., NVQ, BTEC, or similar).
- Minimum 3 years of experience in water hygiene and maintenance, preferably in a hospital or healthcare service sector environment.
- Demonstrable experience with mechanical systems and water-related equipment, such as pumps, filtration systems, and tanks.
- Certifications & Training:
- Relevant certificates for water hygiene, such as Legionella Control, Water Hygiene Safety, or HTM 04-01 (or equivalent).
- Certification in Risk Assessment, Legionella Risk Management, and Water Hygiene Control (Desirable).
- First Aid or Health & Safety training (Desirable).
- Skills & Knowledge:
- Good knowledge of water systems and water hygiene control measures, including disinfection, sampling, and testing procedures.
- Ability to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair mechanical systems related to water management.
- In-depth knowledge of Legionella control, water contamination prevention, and infection control standards.
- Familiarity with healthcare industry standards and water hygiene regulations (HTM 04-01, HSE guidelines, etc.).
- Strong understanding of water quality testing, chemical treatments, and water disinfection techniques.
- Proficient in using water treatment and monitoring equipment (e.g., water quality meters, chlorine testing kits, etc.).
- Personal Attributes:
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with a hands-on approach to maintenance and repair.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
- Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex issues in simple terms.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with multiple departments.
