Description/Job Summary

POSITION DESCRIPTION

HGL is currently seeking a Water Treatment Plant Operator to support work on the Zortman Landusky site in North Central Montana. This position is to assist a team of on-site project personnel to operate the Site’s water treatment plants and to monitor plant operation and adjust process control variables to maintain efficient/optimum treatment rates. Systems within the treatment plant include a desktop computer, lime silo/slaker, polymer mix/feed equipment, air compressors and air blower, variety of centrifugal pumps, carbon dioxide storage and injection equipment, tank mixers, and multi-media filtration equipment.

The position requires personnel to operate and monitor a variety of pumping stations located across the site to ensure proper water containment and compliance with the overall water management plan. Pumping equipment includes centrifugal pumps, electric motors, diesel powered pumps, submersible pumps, well pumps, and numerous diesel-powered emergency backup generators.

The Site is staffed 10 hours per day, 365 days per year with a minimum of two people. Weekend and Holiday work is required. Occasional extended overnight shifts are required due to severe weather (snow) during the Winter months. During overnight stays to clear site roadways of snow, sleep breaks are provided, and employees are paid for all the time required to be onsite. The Operator position is full-time and permanent and requires working both indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions. Occasional periods of heavy physical labor (shoveling, lifting, etc.) are required.

The position is 10-hours per shift and follows the schedule: 7 days on, 7 days off.

Responsibilities/Duties

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Operating and monitoring a variety of water pumping stations and treatment plant facility with various treatment systems.
  • Performing surface and groundwater sampling activities. Preserve samples according to established project SOP guidelines. Perform water quality analysis using both bench top instruments as well as field instruments.
  • Operation and maintenance of all capture systems, water conveyance lines, and electrical lines onsite.
  • Daily sludge management to maintain sludge/clear water capacities. Leach pad and pond solution inspection, monitoring and inventory.
  • Maintain daily pumpback checks - recording flow and discharge data.
  • Influent/effluent sample collection and assistance with field lab analyses, including but not limited to: pH; Specific Conductivity; Nitrates; and Total Suspended Solids.
  • Site-wide maintenance and management including:
    • General site maintenance of roads, reclamation, stormwater controls, snow removal, freight, and fencing.
    • Assist with both regularly scheduled preventative maintenance and non-routine maintenance of all pumps and equipment.
  • Safe equipment operation including:
    • Operation of the following equipment: 16G motor grader, D9N dozer, backhoe, bobcat, boom truck, forklift, 4-wheel drive pickup, 4-wheeler, UTV, snowmobile.
    • Operation of HDPE fusion machine, arc welder, and cutting torch.
  • Complying with Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) policies, including Readiness Reviews.
  • Complies with procurement policies.
  • Completes other tasks as assigned.
  • Assisting with a variety of construction and/or demolition activities as directed by HGL Site management team.
  • Performing basic preventive maintenance inspections and service on water treatment plant and pumping station equipment.
  • Performing basic weed control, road maintenance and interior and exterior maintenance of treatment buildings and pump stations.
  • Snow removal operating various methods including snow blowers and plow trucks.

Minimum Requirements

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

  • A minimum of 3 years of applicable work experience.
  • A High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Mechanical aptitude to perform preventative maintenance, troubleshoot and repair equipment.
  • Candidate must be able to follow instructions, both verbally and written, covering all critical Site work activities and standard operating procedures (SOP’s).
  • Basic working knowledge of computers and Windows software.
  • Strong team member skills and a proven ability to work with minimal supervision.

Desired Qualifications

WHAT YOU NEED TO STAND OUT – Preferred, not required

  • Prefer candidates with a minimum of three years industrial experience, mechanical aptitude, and prior 10-hour shift-work experience.
  • Has a wastewater treatment certification or ability to obtain one.
  • Prefer a candidate with background in water treatment plants in a mining setting.
  • Prefer a candidate with a basic knowledge of chemical handling and safety.
  • Welding, Mechanical, and/or Electrical Experience.

  • Ability to lift/move/relocate items up to 50 lbs; Prolonged standing up to 70% of the time; Walking long distances; Walking over uneven or mountainous terrain; Repetitive hand motions (typing, tool use, etc.); Ability to see details at close range; Ability to see details at a distance; Ability to interpret and analyze visual data (maps, graphs, warning indicators, etc.); Operating heavy machinery or tools; Driving a company or personal vehicle; Climbing ladders or stairs.
  • Reading and interpreting technical documents or regulations; Communicating effectively with clients, team members, and stakeholders.

WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.); May work in environments with loud noises, dust, or hazardous materials; Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE); Potential for longer days up to 12 hours in duration.

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.65 - $35.74.
This position's final hourly rate can be impacted by various factors including, but not limited to, contractual requirements, geographic location, job-related education, training, experience, and skills.
