Wayne Community College Police Officer

Primary Purpose

To ensure the safety and security of the college community, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Sworn Officers enforce federal, state, and local laws, as well as campus policies and regulations, while fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive campus environment. Through patrols, emergency response, crime prevention, and community engagement, officers protect life and property, deter criminal activity, and promote a secure learning environment. Wayne Community College Police Officers are expected to act with integrity, professionalism, and sound judgment, serving as trusted members of the campus community and contributing to the overall mission of the institution.

Position Duties

  • Maintain a safe and secure learning environment that supports student success.
  • Enforce all applicable state and federal laws, as well as campus policies and regulations, to ensure the safety and security of the main campus and college property.
  • Conduct vehicle and foot patrols and assist in securing campus buildings and facilities.
  • Provide assistance and support to students, visitors, and employees.
  • Enforce campus traffic regulations while maintaining positive working relationships with local law enforcement agencies, students, visitors, and campus employees.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned based on departmental needs.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including both hot and cold environments.
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule, including nights, weekends, on-call assignments, and short-notice scheduling, as required.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification.
  • Certification through the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Standards Commission, or the ability to obtain and maintain certification as required.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license with a driving record that meets the requirements to be insurable under Wayne Community College’s auto insurance policy.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check, drug screening, and required medical and psychological evaluations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Prior law enforcement experience, preferably in a campus or community-oriented policing environment.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.
  • National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC).

Supplemental Information

Unofficial transcripts from all degree-granting institutions must be electronically attached to your application or submitted to Human Resources before being considered for an interview. To be considered, all degrees must be awarded by a regionally accredited institution recognized by the United States Department of Education.

Official transcripts for all coursework and degrees will be required within 30 days of hire.

Foreign Degrees: Foreign degree evaluations must be attached in lieu of transcripts for degrees earned outside the United States. Transcripts from foreign institutions will not be considered alone.

Foreign Credential Evaluation Services: Wayne Community College accepts foreign transcript evaluations only from the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. *Prices for transcript evaluations vary from agency to agency, and payment is the applicant's responsibility.
