Definition

Starting Hourly Rate: $27.32 6 Months: $27.73

Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty as a skilled welder; and performs related work as required from assigned division and supervision.

Examples Of Duties

Welds a variety of metal parts to specification using electric (Metal Inert Gas Welding (MIG), Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Plasma cutter) or oxy-acetylene torch cutting, selects correct temperatures and fusing materials for metal, heats metal with welding torch to melt and fuse metals, welded edges with grinder.

Repairs and fabricates parts for heavy equipment, trucks, automobiles, shop facilities or other municipal structures.

Assists in general automotive, building and facility systems repair, estimates time and materials required to make equipment repairs and modifications, interprets and follows specifications and diagrams in fabricating parts and modifying equipment.

Perform other miscellaneous tasks, as supervision deems necessary.

Qualifications

Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Successful completion of trade school training in the use of oxy-acetylene and SMAW, MIG and TIG welding equipment, and two years of responsible welding experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Experience with and knowledge of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) standards for steel, aluminum and stainless steel required.

Must possess a valid driver’s license upon application, obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit (CDLP) with air brake endorsement within 30 days of appointment and obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement within 90 days of appointment and maintain throughout duration of employment.

Must possess personal tools.

Must pass a physical examination and background check as prescribed by the City of Davenport. All CDL personnel are subject to Federal Motor Carriers Random Drug & Alcohol Program.

Must reside in Iowa or Illinois within two (2) years of hire and maintain residency throughout the duration of employment.

Knowledge and Skills

Considerable Knowledge of:
Assembly, maintenance and operation of acetylene and all electric welding equipment.

Kinds of welding rods and flux to be used with different kinds of metal.

Techniques of welding metals of various thicknesses and uses.

Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.

Occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Preheating methods and techniques required to avoid distortion of metal surfaces, structures, and piping.

Properties of various ferrous and non-ferrous metals in relation to welding and brazing, such as their reaction to heat, fusing qualities and proper temperature for welding, cutting and brazing.

Considerable Skill in:
Identifying various commonly used metals.

Operating and using the acetylene torch and electric arc welders, and completing sound uniform welds of various metals.

Operating a variety of power tools used in connection with fabrication and repair of metal structures and equipment. (overhead crane, forklift, Hydraulic Iron worker and Mill)

Following written and verbal instructions.

Working Skill in:
Preparing estimates of materials and supplies required for proposed fabrication and repair.

Interpreting drawings and specifications and preparing sketches of proposed projects.

Making minor repairs in welding equipment.

Some Skill in:
Estimating temperatures by the color of heated metals.
