Job Title
Sheet Metal Welder / Sheet Metal Worker
Job Overview
A Sheet Metal Welder combines the art of metal shaping with precise welding—fabricating, assembling, and installing thin metal components for equipment, structures, ductwork, enclosures, and more.
Core Duties & Responsibilities
Fabrication & Welding Tasks:
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and welding symbols to guide fabrication.
- Measure, cut, bend, shape, and assemble sheet metal using tools like shears, brakes, rollers, saws, and shears.
- Weld components using appropriate methods (MIG, TIG, spot, stick, arc), depending on material and specification.
- Support seams through riveting, bolting, soldering, or sealing applications where needed.
Quality Assurance & Inspection:
- Inspect welds and metal joints for strength, porosity, alignment, flatness, and finish.
- Use tools like calipers, micrometers, rulers, and retractors for precise measurements.
- Maintain clean work areas, restock materials, and ensure safe, orderly setups.
Machine & Tool Operation:
- Operate sheet metal machinery such as press brakes, guillotines, spot welders, band saws, shears, grinders, and power tools.
- Prepare weld joints using grinders, files, or torch machines—ensuring surfaces are clean and properly fitted.
Safety & Equipment Maintenance:
- Follow safety protocols; use appropriate PPE (e.g., helmets, gloves, goggles, respirators).
- Conduct preventive maintenance on welding and fabrication equipment.
Collaboration & Documentation:
- Coordinate with engineers, supervisors, or teams to ensure fabrication meets project goals.
- Document projects, report issues, complete QC checks, and track production records.
Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills:
- Strong proficiency in welding methods: MIG, TIG, spot welding; optionally stick or flux-cored welding.
- Skilled in reading blueprints, CAD prints, drawings, and welding symbols.
- Experienced with sheet metal tools: brakes, shears, punches, grinders, saws.
- Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and ability to work precisely with thin-good metals.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Ability to work in various positions—standing for long periods, lifting (up to ~25 lbs), climbing scaffolds, kneeling, and reaching.
- Comfortable working in shop or field environments, sometimes at heights or confined spaces, with varying ventilation.
