Posting Context Statement:

Position Overview:
This position will fabricate, install and repair mechanical systems, research equipment and structural components. It will repair and maintain mechanical equipment and perform welding on structural components.

Duties may include:
  • Provide fabrication and maintenance support
  • Use hand-welding, flame-cutting, hand-soldering and brazing equipment to join metal components, fill holes, indentations and seams of fabricated metal products
  • Fabricate custom-made parts
  • Fit, align and assemble fabricated parts; clean and finish projects to meet specifications
  • Rebuild and manufacture replacement parts of complete mechanical assemblies
  • Determine cause of failure or wear and select appropriate repair/replace method
  • Communicate and coordinate with supervisors, coworkers, faculty and students to develop efficient, cost-effective plans
  • Interpret plans, blueprints, schematics, manuals and verbal instructions to determine project scope
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience:
  • Four years of work as a welder/fabricator

Required Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent


Required Other:

  • Possess a valid drivers license and be able to meet university requirements for driving university-owned vehicles
  • Be at least 18 years of age


Additional Preferred:

  • Experience with metal work, woodworking, concrete mixing, pump maintenance, and electrical wiring.
  • Ability to read electronic drawings and technical manuals to operate and repair laboratory equipment.
  • Experience conducting and documenting safety inspections.
  • Current CPR/First Aid Instructor certification.
  • Strong communication skills for effectively interacting with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Experience using basic computer skills (Word, Excel).
  • Ability and experience in teaching and mentoring students in laboratory settings.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
Must be able to:
  • Bend, stoop and work in awkward positions for several hours at a time
  • Climb and work from ladders, scaffolding and scissor lifts
  • Carry, lift or otherwise move items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Work in confined spaces using equipment and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Work in inclement weather conditions
  • Participate in a medical surveillance program and respirator fit test
