Wildland Fire Fighter II

Position Overview

As a Wildland Firefighter II for the Borger Fire Department, you will play a crucial role in our efforts to mitigate the risk of wildfires and protect our community and natural resources. Building upon your experience and training as a wildland firefighter, you will work under the direction of the Fire Mitigation Coordinator or designated leader to implement fuel reduction, vegetation management, prescribed burns, and other wildfire mitigation and response activities. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Assist in the planning and execution of fuel reduction, vegetation management, and prescribed burn projects, following established protocols and procedures to ensure the safe and effective mitigation of wildfire risk.
• Operate and maintain hand tools, chainsaws, pumps, and other equipment used in wildfire mitigation activities, performing routine maintenance and inspections to ensure operational readiness.
• Participate in assessments of wildfire risk and vulnerability, contributing to the identification of high-risk zones and the development of mitigation measures to reduce the threat of wildfires.
• Provide support to firefighting operations during wildfire incidents, assisting with the suppression and containment of fires and ensuring the safety of team members and residents.
• Participate in training and professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge related to wildland firefighting, fire behavior, and emergency response.
• Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other stakeholders to coordinate activities and ensure the successful execution of wildfire mitigation projects.
• Follow established safety protocols and procedures to mitigate risks and hazards associated with wildfire mitigation activities, prioritizing the safety of personnel and the public.

Typical Qualifications

• Certification as a Wildland Firefighter by the NWCG or equivalent certification from a recognized authority.
• High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or coursework in wildfire management, forestry, or related fields preferred.
• Previous experience in wildland firefighting or related fields preferred.
• Physical ability to perform strenuous outdoor work in various weather conditions, including extreme heat and rugged terrain.
• Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
