Position Title: Wildland Fire Module Squad Boss

Division: Wildland

Supervisor: WFM Assistant

Mission Statement

To encourage and promote wildfire safety and prevention to make our mountain community a safe place to live, work, and play.


The Wildland Fire Module Squad Boss is a permanent full time position responsible for overseeing the implementation all aspects of operations for a Type 2 Wildland Fire Module. The Squad Boss reports directly to the Module Assistant on day to day operations, and is ultimately supervised by the Module Lead.


Under the direction of the Module Lead and Assistant, the Squad Boss will:


  • Supervise Module Senior Firefighter and Crewmembers in day-to-day operations as directed by Module Lead and Assistant.
  • Provide consistent leadership during implementation of operations.
  • Provide for safe operations in the workplace and on assignment.
  • Participate in daily planning for projects and in wildfire suppression operations.
  • Ensure compliance of all Wildland Fire Division SOPs.
  • Ensure all Module Management Programs are being implemented as issued by the Module Lead.
  • Directly manage and oversee morning briefings, radio programming and cloning, station supplies, vehicle operation, equipment operation, and planning, maintenance, and other duties as assigned.
  • Oversee Spike Camp and vehicle maintenance, and personal conduct while on fire assignment.
  • Oversee conduct and ensure compliance with Core Values at all time.
  • Provide first line of contact for employee issues including conflict, complaints, injury or Worker’s Compensation claims and initiate documentation as required.
  • Provide performance evaluations for all responsible crewmembers and Senior Firefighter.
  • Provide training both classroom and OJT.
  • First line of discipline for performance issues with all responsible crewmembers.
  • Assistance with interviews, hiring, and onboarding of all crewmembers.
  • Reinforce the Chain of Command at all times.

The Wildland Fire Module Squad Boss is a primary Wildland Fire Position, and will be expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times, while maintaining a unified leadership presence to all responsible crewmembers under the direction of the Module Lead and Assistant.


Required Experience, Education, and Training


Experience

  • 3 Years of Wildland Fire Experience
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Leadership and training experience

Certifications

  • FFT1
  • FAL2/3
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must pass background check

Training

  • S130, L180, S131, S190, S290, S212, S219, ICS 100, 200, 700, 800
  • Various on the job trainings.

Working Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Arduous physical activity is required in the performance of normal duties, occasionally under extreme adverse conditions.
  • This position requires standing, walking, stooping, bending, lifting, crawling, jumping, sliding, climbing and repetitive motion.
  • Work is performed in all weather conditions, wind, snow, rain and in extreme temperatures below 0 degrees Fahrenheit and excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Work is performed under hazardous and adverse conditions, including but not limited to slippery/uneven surfaces, proximity to moving mechanical equipment, burning materials, broken glass or other materials, electrical currents, high places and confined spaces.
  • Work may result in exposure to smoke, gases, chemicals, fumes, odors, mists and dusts, which can affect the respiratory system or skin.
  • Employees are required to maintain training and utilize personal protective equipment as supplied from the District as needed to perform their duties.
  • This position demands frequent use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling (identifying objects by touch), depth perception and color vision.
  • This position requires the ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • This position will involve periods of high physical, mental and/or emotional stress.
  • This position will involve travel for wildland fire assignments around the United States for up to 21 days plus travel.
