The NC Wildlife Resources Commission Mission Statement is to conserve North Carolina’s wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation. The Commission is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of N.C. fishing, hunting, trapping and boating laws. The NCWRC employs over 700 full-time staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, customer service, information technology, and administrative professionals.
Law Enforcement
The NC Wildlife Resources Commission Law Enforcement Division employs over 200 Wildlife Officers who patrol fields, forests and inland waters at all hours, in all 100 North Carolina counties. These officers ensure public compliance with fishing, wildlife and boating laws and regulations and enforces the conservation of wildlife resources and provides public safety through both proactive law enforcement and the instruction of quality education.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking applicants for a Wildlife Law Enforcement Director for our Law Enforcement Division.
The employee in this position develops and implements the Division’s law enforcement programs and policies, establishes and executes long-range strategic goals and objectives for the Division, sets operational priorities and oversees the administration and management of the operational budget. As the chief administrative officer, this employee indirectly supervises and is responsible for all 224 division employees while directly supervising three staff positions. All operations of the division are subject to approval at this level. This position has responsibility for coordination of work with the other Division Chiefs to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the agency.
This position oversees the planning and coordination of all headquarters and field activities. Works closely with the executive level of the agency and the Wildlife Resources Commission to resolve problems of a sensitive or controversial nature, recommends or justifies new programs and expenditures, and provides consultation regarding enforcement activities. Participates in the rule-making process.
Work requires considerable contact and relationships with federal, state and local law enforcement representatives and agencies, community and special interest groups and the general public in order to plan, negotiate or resolve investigations, promote established programs and render administrative decisions. Responsibilities are carried out as prescribed by the NC General Statutes, the NC Administrative Code, local regulations and the US Code of Federal Regulations, in support of the agency’s strategic plan.
A modified schedule is associated with this position which involves working 40 hours per week (specific times set by manager), though night work and overnight travel may be required on occasion. Individual in this position may be required to work some weekends and/or holidays. This position is based at the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission Headquarters located in Raleigh, NC.

Management Preferences

Thorough knowledge of inland fishing, hunting, trapping, and boating laws and rules and standard operating procedures of the Commission’s Wildlife Enforcement Division.

Ability to communicate, both oral and written, in order to analyze problems, devise solutions, and personally relate to officers and others.

Experience planning and supervising general operations for a statewide law enforcement program, including establishing long-term objectives, assessing and managing organizational structure, and tasking human, fiscal, and physical resources.

Ability to establish and enforce policies that meet the Commission’s strategic plan, Division objectives, and other organizational needs.

Experience identifying opportunities and taking actions to build strategic relationships with internal and external partners.
Special Qualifications/Requirements
Certification as a NC Wildlife Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and twelve years of NC Wildlife Law Enforcement Experience, including two years supervising NC Wildlife Law Enforcement Officers or supervising complex Wildlife Law Enforcement operations,
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications
Certification as a NC Wildlife Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
