WORKERS' COMPENSATION CONSULTANT

This is the full journey level. Under the general direction of the Workers' Compensation Supervisor, the Workers' Compensation Consultant audits workers' compensation for self-insured employers; investigates and resolves issues and disputes concerning workers' compensation laws and its application; analyzes the application of and enforces workers' compensation rules and regulations, programs and laws; analyzes, reviews, audits, and investigates industrial injury claims or the extent of compliance with workers' compensation coverage and laws; assists in training subordinate staff; and does other related work.

Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month. Working Conditions

The incumbent's home residence is designated as the headquarter and is required to travel as part of their job duties. The position requires the incumbent to work extensively on computers as necessary for reviewing claim files, conducting research, determining compliance determinations, compiling data and reports, drafting email communication, and other purposes.

Department Information

The Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) was established in 1927. DIR administers and enforces laws governing wages, workplace safety and health, apprenticeship training programs, and medical care and other benefits for injured workers.

Desirable Qualifications

Have strong analytical and problem solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to independently and effectively perform and complete work projects.
Proficient knowledge of California workers' compensation laws and regulations and applications of relevant case laws and trends.
Knowledge of California self-insurance reserving statutes and regulations and claims administration functions.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, primarily Word and Excel applications.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Excellent communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships and effectively resolve conflicts between personnel and/or the public in a timely, tactful, and fair manner.
Ability to evaluate cases to determine the necessary tasks to conduct a thorough investigation.
Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information in accordance with attorney/client privilege, deliberative staff process, privacy requirements, and regulatory and Departmental policies.
