Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY: Tutor writing at SVSU’s Writing Center. The Writing Center serves Saginaw Valley State University by raising the level of excellence in student writing at all levels and in all disciplines. To achieve this goal, the Writing Center provides one-on-one tutorial sessions, workshops, and various resources for students to develop their skills as writers and critical thinkers within the academic community and the community at large.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with student writing tutoring, supervising, and scheduling of Writing Center tutors.
  • Collaborate with Writing Center Director, Gerstacker Academic Commons Directors, Academic Affairs, English Department staff, RPW staff, and other SVSU stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate effective writing center-focused tutoring habits, including mentoring and training tutors and assisting in tutoring sessions as necessary.
  • Manage tutor work schedules in conjunction with the Writing Center Director and/or Academic Affairs as necessary.
  • Daily usage of Microsoft Office Suite and TracCloud
  • Develop and give Writing Center presentations and workshops as necessary
  • Appear at university events representing the Writing Center/Gerstacker Academic Commons as necessary
  • Assist with Writing Center marketing (flyer, digital postings, etc.) as necessary
  • Professionally handle behavioral issues based on Career Service’s 2025-2026 On-Campus Student Employee Handbook.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

General supervision is received from the Director of the Writing Center

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required prior to position start date.
  • Minimum of three (3) semesters of in-person and online Writing Center tutoring experience
  • Experience with broad variety of writing courses and writing assignments
  • Strong writing/critical thinking ability
  • Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently, find resources, answer questions, and solve problems
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Teams, and working knowledge of TracCloud.
  • Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community
  • Availability Monday-Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree with a concentration in writing (English, Creative Writing, and/or Professional and Technical Writing or closely related field).
  • 3-4 semesters of in-person and online Writing Center tutoring experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Duties are generally performed inside and not exposed to adverse conditions.
  • All work associated with this role must be performed within the state of Michigan.
