Program Overview

The Learning to Work (LTW) program supports high school students ages 16–21 who are working toward earning a diploma. The program provides academic support, attendance outreach, and college and career readiness services to help students successfully transition into post-secondary education, training, or employment.

Position Summary

Queens Community House is seeking a Youth Development Specialist to provide direct support to high school students in a school-based setting. This role focuses on academic monitoring, attendance support, student engagement, and career exploration.

This position is ideal for an early-career or entry-level candidate interested in education, social services, or youth development. The ideal candidate enjoys working with young people, is reliable and organized, and is comfortable communicating with students, families, and colleagues.

The role requires the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, follow through on tasks, and utilize technology such as email, Excel, and database systems. A willingness to learn and grow is essential for success in this position.

Key Responsibilities

Student Support & Engagement

  • Provide one-on-one support to students focused on academic progress, attendance, and goal setting
  • Monitor student performance and identify barriers to success
  • Support students in planning for college, vocational training, or employment
  • Assist students with completing education, training, or job-related applications

Workshops & Group Activities

  • Facilitate or assist with workshops on job readiness, life skills, and career exploration
  • Promote student participation through structured group activities
  • Encourage positive engagement and skill development in group settings

Family & Outreach Support

  • Communicate with students and families regarding attendance and participation
  • Conduct outreach to re-engage students as needed
  • Build and maintain professional, supportive relationships with families and caregivers

Documentation & Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and timely student records and case notes
  • Track attendance, participation, and outcomes using electronic systems
  • Complete required documentation and administrative tasks on time
  • Assist with additional program responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree (completed or in progress) in Education, Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)

  • Experience supporting youth through work, internships, volunteer roles, or part-time positions
  • Experience in a school, nonprofit, social services, or community-based setting
  • Familiarity with college preparation, career planning, job readiness, or academic support
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a structured, fast-paced environment

Schedule

  • Monday – Friday
  • 35 hours per week (school-day schedule)
  • Typical hours: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM or 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, depending on school site
  • Occasional evenings may be required for events, workshops, or meetings

Compensation

  • $20.00 – $23.00 per hour, commensurate with experience
