Accounting Assistant
Reports To: Senior Accountant
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Type: Part-Time (typically 15–25 hours per week)
Pay Grade: $16-20/hr, BCHA part-time employee benefits include vacation and sick time accruing with years employed
Position Summary
The Part-Time Accounting Assistant provides financial and administrative support to the Housing Authority’s finance operations. The position assists with accounts payable, receivables, financial recordkeeping, and general accounting tasks to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance with applicable policies and program requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Accounts Payable

Process vendor invoices and verify supporting documentation.

Prepare accounts payable entries and assist with payment processing.

Maintain organized vendor files and payment records.
Accounts Receivable and Tenant Accounting

Assist with posting tenant rent payments and other receivables.

Support reconciliation of tenant receivable accounts when needed.
Financial Recordkeeping

Maintain financial records and assist with document retention.

File invoices, payment records, and financial documentation in accordance with Authority policies.

Assist in maintaining organized electronic and physical accounting files.
Financial Support Tasks

Assist with monthly reconciliations and financial reports.

Help prepare supporting documentation financial reviews.

Financial data entry.
Administrative and Compliance Support

Assist with maintaining internal financial controls.

Support record preparation for financial monitoring or program reviews.

Provide administrative support for the finance function as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Basic knowledge of accounting principles and financial recordkeeping.

Ability to maintain accurate financial records and data entry.

Ability to use accounting software and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.

Ability to organize financial documents and maintain confidentiality.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to communicate professionally with vendors, staff, and residents when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.

1–2 years of accounting, bookkeeping, or financial administrative experience preferred.

Associate degree in accounting, finance, or business administration preferred.

Experience with accounting software or financial systems preferred.

Ability to pass background screening as required by Housing Authority policy.
