Position Summary

The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts seeks a creative, patient, and engaging instructor to lead its Adaptive Arts Program for adults with special needs at a variety of ability levels. This position is responsible for teaching three six-week sessions designed to support participants in exploring art in a welcoming, inclusive environment. Classes meet from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, and instructors are paid for both instructional time and an additional hour each week for planning. The teacher will use the museum’s permanent collection and rotating exhibitions as inspiration for lessons, incorporating a range of accessible art-making techniques. A class budget is provided for materials.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and teach adaptive art lessons for three six-week sessions (10:00 am–12:00 pm) designed for adults with special needs across a variety of ability levels.
• Incorporate the museum’s collection and exhibitions into lesson plans to inspire creativity and engagement.
• Use accessible art materials and adaptive techniques tailored to participants’ abilities and interests.
• Foster a safe, supportive classroom where adults of all abilities feel encouraged to explore and express themselves through art.
• Collaborate with Education staff to ensure lessons align with program goals and participant needs.
• Track use of class materials and manage the provided supply budget effectively.

Qualifications

• Experience teaching art to adults with special needs or diverse abilities (preferred).
• Knowledge of adaptive art practices and inclusive teaching strategies.
• Strong communication, patience, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to connect lessons with artworks from the museum’s collection and exhibitions.
• Dependable, organized, and able to create a positive, supportive learning environment.

Schedule & Compensation

Three six-week sessions held throughout the year.
Class meets 10:00 am–12:00 pm, with an additional paid hour each week for planning.
Hourly rate: $40 (instruction and planning).
A class budget is provided for purchasing art materials
