BASIC FUNCTION
This position will provide Analytical support for the continuous manufacture of quality high density polyethylene (HDPE) and specialty fluids (HDA), consistent with high standards of quality, safety, housekeeping, and good employee relations. Provide support for all Baystar’s manufacturing facilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interact with Plant Operations to ensure that the plants analytical needs are met
- Support ENV group in compliance with all environmental, safety, and health requirements while promoting a safe working environment
- Work in a team with other analyzer technicians to perform routine, extraordinary, and turnaround activities
- Adhere to high standards of productivity, quality, teamwork, housekeeping, and safety
- Keeping supervisor updated on job progress and any problems encountered in completing the defined scope of work
- The Analyzer Specialist drives the overall reliability of gas chromatograph and process analyzer installations in an assigned area of responsibility
- The Specialist monitors, troubleshoots and repairs gas chromatographs and process analyzers, sample collection and conditioning systems, as well as, all associated electronic data handling and communication equipment and controls
- Applies knowledge of process, electronics and chromatography principles in determining equipment malfunctions and applies skills in restoring equipment to desired operation
- Participate as a stakeholder for analyzer projects in the assigned area to ensure that all instrumentation, analytical, and valving components; integration; communications, and building standards are being met
- Perform as a mentoring resource for technicians to troubleshoot problems with control systems and complex analytical equipment in process plants, dehydration, cooling water, wastewater treatment plants, and boiler feed water units
- Review assets and PM’s ensure equipment is correctly identified and has appropriate preventive maintenance activities assigned
- Review existing Warehouse inventory and recommended spare parts lists as well as apply field experience to ensure adequate replacement parts are available as needed
- Review assets for supplier support/obsolescence loss and work with Field Engineering to recommend adequate replacement
- Provide technician training and technical support
- Takes the initiative and is proactive in addressing issues
- Quickly and efficiently completes tasks
- Perform and/or supervise the inspection, repair, calibration and prevention activities associated with a variety of Continuous Gas Analyzers, Moisture Analyzers, and Gas Chromatograph systems
- Investigate equipment failures, determine root cause of failure, and recommend appropriate solutions to reduce reoccurrence of/or eliminate cause of failure
- Participate actively in department/plant safety programs
- Promote safety rules and regulations as well as environmental compliance
- Engage actively in a team environment, bring a positive attitude, maintain personal accountability and provide mentoring and coaching for team member development
- Recommend and specify revisions to improve equipment performance and/or system reliability/capacity
- Participate in the planning and execution of minor and major shutdowns
- Provide technical and hands on support as required during shutdowns
- Willing to support nights and weekends via phone or potential on-site
- Update and provide details for newly or modified SOPs
- Contributes directly to finding root cause and resolution of analyzer bad actors
- Participates in incident investigations related to analyzers
- Acts as mentor and 2nd level support to analyzer maintenance technicians
- Drives the process of sharing analyzer knowledge not only at the local level but across Baystar
- Ensures maximum reliability of analyzer equipment
- During the run and maintain phase, this individual’s main focus will be day-to-day 2nd level maintenance technical support for complex situational and reliability problems
- Will support and assist in establishing and maintaining PM library and detailed PM text (procedures) for analyzers/QMIs.
- Will bring forward and implement programs/procedures to maintain exceptional analyzer equipment reliability
- maintain and coordinate a training plan for analyzer technicians
- Recommends equipment upgrades and replacements when situations warrant it, such as high cost of maintainability, Obsolescence, loss of vendor support, more effective technological breakthroughs, etc
- Participates in Factory Acceptance Tests & Site Acceptance Tests & Assists with the maintaining the central directory for analyzers with technical manuals, system drawings, software, datasheets, etc
- May be called in outside normal working hours to assist analyzer maintenance technicians as emergency situations occur
- Responsible for a multitude of sample conditioning systems and complex analyzer technologies to measure and control streams and side streams including HC’s, CO, NOx, CO2, NH3, CH4, O2, etc
- Intermediate computer skills (knowledge of MS Office, operating systems, company software).
- Ability to work with a team, take directions from supervisors, keep required work schedules, focus attention on details, and follow work rules
- Interface with SCADA, DCS, and analyzer host systems
- Operate and perform activities in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures
- Utilize proper Lockout/Tag out operating and safety procedures
- Installation, maintenance and calibration of VOC & HRVOC analyzers
- Installation, maintenance and calibration of CEMS analyzers
- All pre-requisites of prior levels to be met.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- High school diploma or GED required
- 10-15year of craft experience required (preferably as an analyzer technician)
- Good personal computer skills and knowledge
- Demonstrated math, reading and problem-solving skill
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude
- The ability to read P&IDs, wiring diagrams, schematics, GC oven diagrams, and other complex instrumentation/electrical drawings
- The ability to read at a level to understand written safety procedures, work procedures, blueprints, P&IDs, work permits, and technical instruction manuals is required
- Thorough knowledge of AC voltage (120-480) three phase and single phase plus 24 VDC is required
- Strong mechanical aptitude and dexterity in using tools and equipment are required
- The ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, such as percentages, ratios, and proportions, to practical solutions is required
- Basic computer skills, such as creating and editing content in MS Word documents and Excel spreadsheets, is required
- The ability to assume responsibility, prioritize, and respond to multiple tasks under potentially stressful and/or hazardous conditions

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required
- NCCER certification, State license preferred but may be waived in lieu of 15 years or greater in a refinery/petrochemical
- Any and all other electrical certifications to include technical college and/or manufacturing certifications. Siemens, Hobre, and Emerson courses are accounted for as well.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers.
- May be required to achieve and maintain certifications as required to perform job duties.
- Associates degree with an emphasis in Electrical/Mechanical skills, Industrial Electricity Instrumentation or equivalent
- Experience with Honeywell and/or Emerson DCS systems
- Candidate will be required to successfully complete a bench test
- Candidates will be required to successfully complete extensive testing, drug/alcohol screen, physical requirement evaluation and an extended training period
PHYSICAL CAPACITY REQUIREMENTS
This position requires the incumbent to:
- Wear a SCBA and/or facemask respirator where directed by signage or where safety precautions are necessary
- Specific vision abilities include near, far, and intermediate distances, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception
- Required to work at ground level, from ladders, and from heights greater than 250’ above grade on fixed platforms, mobile equipment platforms, and scaffolding
- Ascend and descend stairs and stationary vertical ladders with and without a safety cage
- Access confined spaces and pressure vessels through standard 24" manways
- Must be capable of lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds
- Frequent bending, reaching, stooping, crawling, walking, and climbing
- Sit or stand for extended periods of time
- Work at computer for significant periods of time throughout the day
- Required to reach overhead and at shoulder level with hands and arms
- Must demonstrate fine and gross motor coordination including pinching, gripping, turning, and keyboarding of both hands
- Move about uneven surfaces, including catwalks, deck grating, and wet and muddy areas
- Work outside in all weather conditions walking up to ½ mile per job
