Job Description – API Test Engineer (Manual & Automation)

About the Role

We are seeking a highly capable and motivated API Test Engineer who will be responsible for validating and enhancing the quality of our API platforms through comprehensive manual and automated testing. The candidate should possess strong interpersonal skills—comfortable communicating across diverse groups, able to influence and motivate teams, and confident in presenting ideas to achieve alignment. As the sole test engineer on the team, the individual must be a quick learner, self-driven, and capable of independently establishing and maintaining a robust testing framework.

Key Responsibilities

Perform manual and automated testing of REST APIs, including functional, integration, and regression testing.
Design, execute, and maintain test cases, test scenarios, and automation scripts for APIs.
Validate request/response structures, payloads, schemas, HTTP status codes, and error messages.
Conduct API testing using Postman, create and run test collections, and execute data-driven tests.
Develop and enhance API automation suites using Postman or other frameworks such as RestAssured.
Work closely with Product Owners, Developers, and Solution Architects to understand business and technical requirements.
Identify bugs, document defects, and track them through resolution.
Maintain comprehensive test documentation including test plans, execution logs, and release validation reports.
Act as the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for all testing activities within the API team.

Must Have Skills

API Fundamentals

Strong understanding of REST APIs, HTTP methods, status codes, and JSON payload structures.
Good knowledge of authentication mechanisms such as OAuth 2.0, JWT, Basic Auth, and API Keys.

Postman Expertise

Hands-on experience in writing and executing API tests in Postman.
Experience with JavaScript assertions in the Tests tab.
Ability to create and run Collections and use the Collection Runner for data-driven testing with CSV/JSON files.
Proficiency in creating and managing environment variables and global variables.

Testing Skills

Experience in positive, negative, and boundary testing of APIs.
Ability to derive test scenarios from API specifications and documentation.
Strong understanding of HTTP error codes, exception handling, and validation rules.
Experience executing regression testing for APIs.

Tools & Technologies

Postman (mandatory)
Swagger / OpenAPI documentation
Test data handling using JSON / CSV
Basic knowledge of Git for version control

Good to Have

Experience with API automation tools like RestAssured or similar.
Exposure to microservices architecture and cloud platforms such as AWS/Azure.
Familiarity with Agile/Scrum practices and CI/CD pipelines.
