Application Scientist – Performance Coatings

Job Mission

The scientist in this role in the Performance Coating Group will actively engage & supervise lab scale and production trials of polymer products and qualify them through application testing. The ideal candidate would have a customer focused mindset, knowledge of coatings formulations and tests, and ability to develop polymeric products for coating applications.

Key Job Accountabilities

Lead and/or support trials of Lubrizol’s performance coating product lines including acrylic emulsions, hyperdispersants and polyurethane dispersions
Conduct testing for qualifying locally manufactured products and develop data package in support of demonstrating the value proposition of the product as relevant for the IMEA market.
Understand customer’s needs and deliver project milestones focused on results against meeting customer’s timeline and technical targets.
Analyze and communicate test results, challenges, and opportunities to internal and external stakeholders.
Operate with safety at the forefront and actively participate in the department safety programs
Work on development of in-house formulation and testing capabilities
Develop and apply structure-property relationship for resins and additives.
Work as an active member of cross-functional team ensuring alignment of project definition with marketing and sales.
Build strong relationships, and collaboration with the global technical team leveraging expertise and sharing insights from local region.
Prioritize and align project deliverables with the IMEA commercial team

Basic Qualifications

M.S./Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry or related field from an accredited college/university with a minimum 5+ years’ experience in polymer synthesis for coating applications.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Skills to develop and implement coatings characterization methods and to interpret results.
Fundamental understanding of pigment dispersions, one component (1K) and two component (2K) coatings technologies in both waterborne and solvent borne systems.
Ability to work independently and in multi-disciplinary teams.
Experience supporting multiple projects simultaneously.
Self-starter, highly motivated toward achievements, results oriented and team player.
Ability to travel as needed to support production trials and customer engagement (est. 30%).


Considered a Plus

Experience in Wood, Masonry, Protective, Industrial coating formulations and testing
Experience in the use of statistical methods for design of experiments, data modeling, and analysis of results.
Experience in developing particle dispersions
