Arc Welder

An Arc Welder uses an electric arc to melt and join metal components, working from blueprints and specifications to fabricate, repair, and maintain various metal products in industries like construction, manufacturing, and shipbuilding. Key duties include preparing materials, operating welding equipment, ensuring weld quality and adherence to safety codes, and maintaining a clean work area and equipment. The role requires strong knowledge of welding techniques, attention to detail, and the ability to work with heavy materials in various positions.

Responsibilities:

• Interpret plans: Study and understand blueprints, diagrams, work orders, and specifications to determine the correct layout and dimensions for welding.
• Prepare materials: Clean and degrease metal joints or workpieces using brushes, grinders, or chemical baths before welding.
• Operate equipment: Set up and operate electric arc-welding equipment and machines to apply correct voltage, amperage, and electrode type.
• Perform welding: Manually guide the electrode or gun along the weld line to deposit metal, ensuring proper depth of fusion and bead size in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
• Inspect work: Examine finished welds for quality, soundness, and conformance to project specifications.
• Repair and maintain: Repair broken or cracked parts by filling holes, and perform routine maintenance on welding equipment.
• Maintain safety: Follow all applicable safety regulations, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Required Skills and Abilities:

• Technical skills: Proficient in various arc welding techniques (e.g., TIG, MIG, submerged arc).
• Spatial awareness: Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
• Attention to detail: For inspecting welds and ensuring high-quality results.
• Physical strength: Capable of lifting and handling heavy materials and working in awkward positions.
• Safety awareness: Strong commitment to safety protocols and regulations.
