Assistant Public Defender

ASSISTANT PUBLIC DEFENDER

We are looking for someone who wants to help indigent people charged with criminal offenses and gain courtroom and jury trial experience. The attorney would be handling a misdemeanor caseload and be assigned to a specific courtroom with a courtroom partner. No criminal law experience is necessary as training is provided. We currently have 6 felony assistant, 1 juvenile assistant, and 2 misdemeanor assistant positions. We also have an investigator and 4 support staff members. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30-4:30 and it is rare for employees to work late. There is a rotating Sunday bond court split evenly between the 9 attorneys. There is no residency requirement and no on-call expectation. This position qualifies for federal student loan repayment programs. Benefits are provided through Vermilion County and include health, dental, retirement, and more.

Starting Salary is $70,000 - $72,500
