Detailed Responsibilities – Purchase Manager (Cables Industry)
- Procurement & Sourcing
- Identify, evaluate, and finalize reliable suppliers for cables, conductors, wires, and accessories.
- Handle procurement of raw materials such as copper, aluminum, PVC, XLPE, steel tapes, and insulation materials.
- Float RFQs (Request for Quotation), compare technical-commercial offers, and prepare negotiation sheets.
- Vendor Development & Management
- Develop new vendors to reduce dependency on a single source.
- Maintain long-term relationships with key cable manufacturers and suppliers.
- Conduct supplier audits for quality, delivery reliability, and compliance with industry standards (IS/IEC/ASTM).
- Cost Control & Negotiation
- Negotiate price contracts considering market volatility of copper/aluminum.
- Lock long-term rate contracts for stable procurement.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities through alternate suppliers, bulk procurement, and optimized logistics.
- Inventory & Material Planning
- Forecast material requirements based on project pipeline and production schedules.
- Coordinate with stores to maintain optimum stock levels and avoid shortages.
- Implement Just-in-Time (JIT) procurement strategies where feasible.
- Quality & Compliance
- Ensure that all procured materials meet technical specifications, safety, and compliance standards.
- Work closely with the Quality Assurance team for pre-dispatch inspections and material approvals.
- Ensure adherence to company procurement policies, legal requirements, and ethical practices.
- Market Intelligence & Reporting
- Track global and domestic trends in copper, aluminum, and polymer prices affecting cable costs.
- Prepare periodic procurement reports for management on cost savings, vendor performance, and market updates.
- Benchmark cable pricing across multiple suppliers for competitive advantage.
- Coordination & Support
- Liaise with project teams to ensure timely delivery of cables for site execution.
- Coordinate with finance for supplier payments, credit terms, and reconciliation.
- Support R&D/Engineering in sourcing special/customized cables.
- Team & Process Management
- Lead and mentor a small procurement team.
- Implement ERP/Procurement software for streamlined purchasing.
- Continuously improve procurement processes for efficiency and transparency.
Skills & Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of LV, MV, HV & EHV cables, joints, and terminations.
- Understanding of raw material procurement (copper, aluminum, PVC, XLPE, etc.).
- Strong negotiation and vendor development skills.
- ERP/Procurement software experience (SAP, Oracle, Tally, etc.).
- Market awareness of cable industry trends and pricing fluctuations.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and analytical skills.
Qualification:
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical Engineering (preferred).
- MBA in Materials Management / Supply Chain (added advantage).
- 5+ years of proven experience in procurement within the cables industry.
