Position Summary

The Medical-Legal Program Attorney plays a pivotal role in addressing the legal needs of individuals whose mental health or substance use conditions are compounded by unmet civil legal issues. This role is integrated within the treatment team, collaborating with clinical, medical, and peer support staff to reduce barriers to recovery. The attorney provides direct legal assistance and systemic advocacy in matters such as housing, benefits, criminal expungement, family law, and employment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice, advocacy, and limited representation in civil and municipal criminal matters impacting recovery, wellness, and housing stability.
  • Collaborate with public defenders or private attorneys in liaison roles for Superior Court matters when appropriate.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to assess clients' legal needs and integrate legal strategies into treatment planning.
  • Maintain a client-centered approach rooted in harm reduction, cultural humility, and trauma-informed care.
  • Educate Maryville staff and clients on relevant legal topics through trainings, outreach, and resource development.
  • Coordinate with local legal aid organizations, social services, and courts to facilitate client access to necessary services.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of client services in compliance with HIPAA and legal standards.
  • Advocate for systemic changes that promote equity and reduce disparities in access to justice for vulnerable populations.
  • Uphold Maryville’s non-discrimination policies and ensure legal support is accessible regardless of prescribed medication use.

Qualifications

  • Required: Juris Doctor from an accredited law school; licensed and in good standing to practice law in New Jersey.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of legal practice in areas such as public benefits, housing, family law, reentry, or health law.
  • Experience working with clients with mental illness, substance use disorder, or who are unhoused or justice-involved.
  • Commitment to racial, social, and economic justice, including familiarity with the CLAS standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual ability is a plus; preference given to candidates who speak Spanish or another high-need language in the region.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: Up to $115,000.00 per year
