Job Responsibilities

  • Represents agency in defense of civil lawsuits, including investigation, case preparation, trial preparation and appeals.
  • Includes complex and/or sensitive litigation; represents agency before state personnel grievance committee as well as in appeals.
  • Works with associated attorneys in outside counsel cases, including providing background information, case analysis and relevant law.
  • Provides legal advice to agency employees, attorneys, court officials and other agencies in interpretation of state and federal laws and agency policy and procedures.
  • Reviews agency policy; develops new agency policy to comport with relevant statutes and case law.
  • Responds to correspondence from attorneys, court officials and state agencies.
  • Conducts independent legal research and works independently in performance of all of the above.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.


SCDC Minimum Requirements:

(Or an acceptable equivalency as approved by the Division of State Human Resources).

  • A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.

  • Membership in the South Carolina bar and completion of rule requirements within six (6) months of employment.

  • 403 requirements within six (6) months of employment.
