Job overview:

The Automation Engineer will be responsible for designing, programming, and maintaining control systems used in food handling, storage, and processing facilities. This role ensures efficient, safe, and reliable operation of automated equipment such as conveyors, packing, and labeling systems. The ideal candidate has strong PLC, SCADA, and electrical troubleshooting experience, along with an understanding of industrial processes in the food industry.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Design & Implementation:

  • Design, develop, and implement automation and control systems for food handling equipment and facilities.
  • Develop PLC programs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar) and HMI/SCADA interfaces for process control and monitoring.
  • Integrate sensors, drives, and field instruments into automated systems.
  • Preparing Project Documentation such as (Operating Manuals, FAT procedures, SAT procedures)

2.Maintenance & Support:

  • Troubleshoot and resolve automation-related issues to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain and update PLC, HMI, and network documentation.
  • Provide technical support for plant operators and maintenance teams.

3.Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure all automation systems comply with relevant safety and environmental regulations.
  • Participate in risk assessments and develop safe work procedures related to control systems.

4.Optimization & Continuous Improvement:

  • Analyze production data to identify areas for efficiency improvements.
  • Implement control logic and data acquisition to optimize energy use, throughput, and equipment reliability.
  • Support digital transformation initiatives, such as predictive maintenance and remote monitoring.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • 2-5 years of experience in industrial automation, preferably in grain handling, food processing, or bulk materials industries.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, etc.).
  • Knowledge of industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
  • Familiarity with instrumentation, VFDs, and motor control systems.
  • Understanding of process control, safety systems, and instrumentation calibration.
  • Experience with C/C++, Python, SQL, and data manipulation.
  • Familiarity with microcontrollers (ARM, AVR, PIC).

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.


Type of employment: Full-time

Work mode: On-site

Work location: KAUST Research & Technology Park, Thuwal, Saudi Arabia.

Transportation: Daily shuttles between Jeddah and KAUST are available.
