Automation Engineer – Dairy Industry

The Automation Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, commissioning, and ongoing support of industrial automation systems across dairy, juice, and UHT processing plants. The role provides technical leadership in PLC, SCADA, and field instrumentation systems, ensuring reliable plant operation, efficient production, and seamless integration with mechanical, electrical, and utility systems. The Automation Engineer supports both new projects and existing operations, driving automation excellence from concept through commissioning and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Automation Design & Implementation

• Design, develop, and implement automation solutions for dairy and beverage processing systems, including milk reception, pasteurization, homogenization, CIP, packaging lines, and utilities.
• Support project teams and OEMs in developing automation design, software architecture, and hardware specifications.

PLC, SCADA & Software Engineering

• Configure, program, and maintain PLC and SCADA systems using Siemens (S7-1200/1500, TIA Portal), Rockwell Automation (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, FactoryTalk), and equivalent platforms.
• Develop HMI interfaces, alarms, and control strategies to ensure safe and efficient plant operation.

Installation & Commissioning

• Lead and oversee automation activities during installation and commissioning of new plants, process lines, and packaging systems.
• Perform I/O checks, loop testing, functional testing, and performance validation of automation systems.

Instrumentation & Process Control

• Manage field instrumentation including flow, pressure, temperature, level, and analytical instruments.
• Calibrate, troubleshoot, and integrate field devices with PLC/SCADA systems to ensure accurate and reliable process control.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

• Diagnose and resolve automation and control system issues to minimize production downtime.
• Maintain system backups, version control, documentation, and change management records for PLC, HMI, and SCADA programs.

Cross-Functional & Operational Support

• Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and utility teams to ensure seamless system integration and operational efficiency.
• Provide automation support for utility systems such as boilers, chillers, compressors, and RO plants.

Project Coordination & Documentation

• Prepare and maintain automation drawings, control narratives, logic diagrams, and technical documentation.
• Coordinate with OEMs, vendors, and contractors for system upgrades, modifications, and expansions.

Qualifications & Skills

Education

• Bachelor’s degree (B.E. / B.Tech) in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline.

Experience

• Minimum 10 years of hands-on industrial automation experience, preferably within the dairy, food, or beverage processing industry.

Technical Competencies

• Strong expertise in PLC programming and troubleshooting using Siemens, Rockwell Automation, and other leading automation platforms.
• Proven experience with SCADA and HMI systems, including WinCC, FactoryTalk View, AVEVA, or equivalent solutions.
• In-depth knowledge of field instrumentation and process control systems for industrial applications.
• Solid understanding of industrial communication protocols, including Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, and Modbus.
