A barista is responsible for preparing and serving a variety of coffee and specialty beverages while delivering excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment. Duties include taking orders, operating espresso machines, maintaining a clean and organized workspace, handling cash or POS transactions, and ensuring customer satisfaction. Baristas are also expected to have knowledge of coffee products, follow health and safety guidelines, and create a welcoming atmosphere for guests.

Description

Customer Service

  • Greet every customer with genuine warmth, making each guest feel valued and appreciated.
  • Take orders efficiently, offering menu recommendations, and answering detailed questions about beverages and food items.
  • Resolve customer concerns and complaints with professionalism, patience, and focus on guest satisfaction.
  • Engage customers in a friendly manner to foster loyalty and encourage repeat business through memorable service.


Beverage & Food Preparation

  • Prepare espresso, coffee, chai, and specialty beverages to precise standards, ensuring consistency in taste and quality.
  • Prepare operate espresso machines, grinders, brewers, and other cafe equipment, troubleshooting minor issues as needed.
  • Follow correct techniques for milk steaming, texturing, flavoring, and artistic drink presentation, including latte art when appropriate.
  • Prepare food items (if applicable) such as pastries, sandwiches, or baked goods, ensuring proper portioning, presentation, and adherence to safety guidelines.

Cash Handling & POS

  • Accurately process customer orders using the POS system, ensuring correct pricing, item entry, and prompt service.
  • Manage cash, credit, and digital payments securely, following all cash handling protocols and balancing the register at shift end.
  • Adhere to store procedures for processing tips, handling refunds, issuing receipts, and documenting all transactions as required.

Cleanliness & Safety

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary workstation at all times, meeting or exceeding health and safety standards.
  • Wash dishes, wipe counters, sanitize surfaces, and restock supplies throughout each shift to ensure operational readiness.
  • Strictly follow all food safety, sanitation, and health regulations to protect guests and staff.
  • Regularly clean and maintain equipment, grinders, and espresso machines throughout the day, performing routine upkeep and reporting maintenance needs to the manager.

Stocking & Inventory Support

  • Proactively restock cups, lids, syrups, coffee beans, dairy products, and retail merchandise to ensure availability during peak times.
  • Rotate inventory using the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) method to ensure freshness and minimize waste.
  • Monitor inventory levels and promptly alert the manager when stock items are low or when replenishment is needed.

Teamwork & Operations

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with coworkers and supervisors, especially during high-volume periods, to coordinate workflow and maintain efficiency.
  • Assist with comprehensive opening and closing procedures, following checklists to ensure the cafe is fully prepared for service or properly secured at the end of the day.
  • Offer proactive support to fellow team members and contribute to a positive, collaborative, and efficient workflow.
