Position Summary:

The barista position plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of Café Oztara and delivering exceptional customer service. They are responsible for a variety of tasks, including food and beverage preparation, customer interaction, and maintaining cleanliness in the café environment. Baristas will work to ensure the café is a safe and supportive environment for customers, staff, hospitality programming trainees, and community. The ideal candidate has excellent customer service skills, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is passionate about the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This job description describes the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this position. It should not be construed as an exhaustive list of all required duties, responsibilities, and skills.

  • Greet customers warmly as they enter the café and engage with them in a friendly and courteous manner.
  • Take orders accurately, provide recommendations, and answer questions about the menu items and preparation methods.
  • Brew coffee, prepare espresso drinks, and craft specialty beverages using coffee machines and other equipment.
  • Prepare and serve food items such as sandwiches, salads, pastries, and baked goods according to café recipes and standards.
  • Complete annual food safety courses required by the local food code.
  • Follow food safety and hygiene protocols, including proper handling, storage, and sanitation of food and beverage ingredients.
  • Operate POS system to process customer transactions accurately and efficiently.
  • Handle cash, credit card payments, and electronic transactions, providing customers with receipts and accurate change as needed.
  • Ensure that the café environment and equipment is clean, tidy, and inviting for customers.
  • Wipe down tables, chairs, and countertops, and sanitize high touch surfaces regularly throughout the day.
  • Monitor and restock condiments, napkins and other supplies to ensure availability for customers.
  • Aid colleagues as needed, including helping with food and beverage preparation, bussing tables, and cleaning tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with other café team members to coordinate tasks, manage customer flow, and support each other during busy periods.

Education and/or Experience:

High School Diploma or equivalent with previous experience in a similar role preferred.

  • Work or lived experience may substitute for education requirements on a case-by-case basis.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong customer service skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities. Attention to detail and ability to follow recipes and instructions accurately. Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Basic math skills and ability to handle cash transactions. Proactive approach to solving problems and communicating to leadership. Knowledge of coffee brewing and espresso preparation preferred.

  • Working in the café employees will be exposed to hot surfaces, steam, and hot liquids.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary: $15.00/hr
