What We Offer

New hires are typically brought into the organization between $120,000 - $160,000/annually, based on experience and education. Location & Schedule
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. In this position you can expect to report to the Denver Wastewater Building (2000 W 3rd. Ave., Denver, CO 80223) on in-office days. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.

The Infrastructure Delivery Division – Bridge Office has an opening for an Engineering Specialist. This position would be part of a larger 17-person team working with engineers, project managers, inspectors, skilled tradesmen, and business administrators. As an Engineering Specialist, you will have an opportunity to oversee structural plan reviews for capital improvement projects (CIP), development projects, bond projects, and lead bridge capital 6-year planning efforts.
Your role, as an Engineering Specialist, is to serve as the technical subject matter expert (SME) for bridge engineering standards, details, plan review, and project programming. Specifically, you will also be able to:
  • Assign and manage workload for up to two direct reports - provide support, guidance, document performance, and provide feedback for continual growth and development.
  • Serve as the department’s primary structural plan reviewer. Ensuring CIP, development, bond, and partner agency projects meet the City and County of Denver bridge code requirements, standards, and best practices.
  • Assist citywide as the primary SME for all city-related bridge projects. Work with project managers to successfully deliver bridge projects.
  • Support in-house repair crews to successfully maintain citywide vehicular, pedestrian and railroad bridges. Provide repair details, sketches, and technical as required, to support structural repairs, and preventative maintenance activities. Support during emergency response by providing rapid structural assessments and repair recommendations.
  • Assist the bridge team’s asset manager, as needed, to interpret inspection data and prioritize bridges for preventative maintenance, rehabilitations, and replacements.
  • Lead the team’s 6-year capital planning efforts for bridges. Work with the team’s manager and supervisor to align capital funding and project manager staffing to successfully execute the team’s projects.
  • Maintain and track bridges in planning, design, and construction. Assign inventory structure numbers to new assets. Assist the team’s asset manager to maintain an accurate bridge inventory.
  • Maintain and continually improve our bridge policy manual, standard bridge specifications, and standard plan detail sheets.
  • Help resolve complex or sensitive community concerns on projects by bringing stakeholders together and facilitating productive conversations on multi-beneficial solutions.
  • Participate in committees and task forces across multiple agencies and/or departments to discuss issues and ensure successful DOTI outcomes.
  • Learn, promote, and convey DOTI values in the work performed including equity, safety, and employee appreciation.
Other job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Directs and evaluates scoping, plan preparation, specifications, project phasing, for all city bridge projects. This requires partnering with city project managers within the bridge, environmental, interagency, and transportation offices.
  • Participates in preparing revisions and updating the department’s engineering standards, monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of program delivery methods and procedures, and recommends policy/procedure revisions.
  • Resolves sensitive, controversial, and complex technical problems involving staff, consultants, contractors, and the public.
  • Assists in developing and managing the budget for the unit/section and allocating funds for projects in order to accomplish yearly goals and objectives.
  • Develops or modifies work plans, methods, and procedures and determines work priorities.
  • Assigns and distributes work, reviews work for accuracy and completeness and returns assignments with recommendations for proper completion.
  • Resolves problems encountered during daily operations and determines standards for problem resolution.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Bring
Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:
  • At least three years of Senior Engineer level experience in horizontal bridge-focused projects and developed skills in program/project management related to capital construction. Your professional experience should include:
    • Extensive experience in bridge engineering, structural plan reviews, and bridge inspection certified is a plus
    • Background in vehicular, railroad, and pedestrian bridge design, rehabilitation, maintenance, and repairs
    • Experience with CDOT plan and specification formats
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in motivating, mentoring, and supporting a team of diverse professionals while providing guidance with professional development.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills to develop and use data to drive decisions and deliver results.
  • Organization, communication, and customer service skills that build community, stakeholder, and team trust.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Architecture.
  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of experience at the type and level of a Senior Engineer or Senior Architect.
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.
  • License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
  • Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application. Or requires registration as an Architect by the Colorado State Board of Registration at the time of application. Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of probation.
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
