Job Description
Chemist: We are seeking an innovative and highly motivated team player to perform laboratory testing and chemical analysis.
  • The Chemist I will be responsible for developing procedures, laboratory testing and chemical analysis, reports, quality control, equipment calibration and maintenance, and inventory control Individual must have the capability to give information, guidance, or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment.


  • The Chemist I must have the ability to give instructions or assignments to helpers or assistants.

  • Ability to lead, operate, and maintain complex equipment that require extended training and experience, such as, Ion chromatography, Gas chromatography, Spectrophotometer, and other laboratory equipment, computers, and the application of custom or commercial administrative, scientific, or other complex software or systems; may involve installation and testing.

  • Ability to coordinate work involving guidelines and rules but solves problems constantly. Preferred software skills include Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Access.

  • The Chemist I position requires familiarity of chemical principles, terminology, techniques, equipment, and laboratory sampling collection and analysis pertaining to water and wastewater.

  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and outside contacts.

  • The ability to climb stairs, bend, stoop, climb ladders, open fire hydrants and valves, operate generator.

  • The ability to work around potentially dangerous machinery; ability to perform laboratory tests at lab tables 37 inches high; ability to make adjustments on lab equipment.

  • The ability to record written information in logs and have good vision (corrected vision fine) and hearing (corrected fine).

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of, and/or outside of, their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-terms department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
