The role of City Attorney within the City of Salina is a unique opportunity for a seasoned legal professional looking to make an impact in municipal law. Duties:

• Advises City Commission & City management on municipal legal matters; prescribes & adopts rules of practice & procedure consistent with the laws of the state of Kansas.
• Drafts & reviews documents including contracts, leases, purchase agreements, ordinances, resolutions, policies, & other legal documents.
• Solves problems & balances political positions of the Commission with a pragmatic approach.
• Provides legal guidance on contract interpretation, negotiation, & obligations, identifying & mitigating potential legal risks.
• Translates complex legal concepts into plain English; conducts legal research & provides opinions to the City Commission, City Manager’s Office, department heads, & other stakeholders.
• Prepares for and/or supervises civil litigation.
• Acts as legal advisor to various City boards & commissions, attending City Commission meetings & other meetings as needed.

Education:

• Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited Law School.
• Licensure to practice law before the Supreme Court of the State of Kansas or licensed in another state with the ability to become licensed within six (6) months of appointment.

Experience:

• Seven (7) years of full-time experience as a licensed attorney or in-house or corporate counsel, including some experience in municipal law.

Requirements:

• Must live within 40 minutes’ drive time.

Work Type:

• Light, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Equipment:

• Computer, tablet, copy machine, telephone, fax & calculator.

Hours:

• Monday – Friday.
• 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
• Attends meetings outside normal office hours.

Pay DOQ EOE:

• $122,460-195,935/yr.

Paid Time Off:

• 60 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 60 hours earned during the year (120 hours in first year).

96 hours of sick leave during first year.
