Position Overview
The Civil Engineer – Steel Structures will be responsible for the design, analysis, and implementation of steel structure components for renovation and maintenance projects. The role will require the candidate to possess a strong background in civil engineering, particularly in the design and detailing of steel structures, along with an understanding of construction processes and standards. Key Responsibilities
- Design & Analysis:
- Lead the design and analysis of steel structure components, ensuring they meet all safety, quality, and design requirements.
- Use software (e.g., AutoCAD, STAAD Pro, Tekla) for structural analysis, modeling, and detailing.
- Ensure that designs comply with local building codes, international standards, and project specifications.
- Structural Detailing:
- Prepare detailed structural drawings for steel components, including connections, beams, columns, and foundations.
- Work closely with fabricators and contractors to ensure the correct execution of designs in accordance with project specifications.
- Project Coordination:
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines (e.g., electrical, mechanical) and project managers to ensure the smooth integration of steel structures into the overall project.
- Assist in the preparation of construction plans and schedules for steel structure works.
- Site Supervision:
- Monitor and supervise the fabrication and erection of steel structures on-site to ensure compliance with design, quality, and safety standards.
- Conduct regular site visits to assess the progress, resolve issues, and provide technical support to the site team.
- Quality Assurance:
- Perform quality control checks during the design, fabrication, and construction phases to ensure that the steel structure meets the required standards.
- Review and verify the workmanship of contractors and subcontractors, ensuring all steel structure works are completed as per approved designs and specifications.
- Material Selection & Procurement:
- Advise on material selection, ensuring cost-effective and suitable materials for the design and structural integrity of the steel structures.
- Work with procurement teams to ensure the timely availability of materials and equipment required for steel structure work.
- Cost & Budget Management:
- Assist in the estimation of steel structure costs and provide input into project budgets.
- Monitor material usage, labor costs, and schedule adherence to keep projects within the allocated budget.
- Health & Safety Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations related to steel structure design and construction.
- Promote safe working practices on-site, with a strong focus on mitigating risks related to steel structure works.
- Reporting & Documentation:
- Maintain detailed records of structural calculations, design changes, and site activities.
- Provide regular reports to the Senior Engineer and Project Manager on the progress of steel structure works, any issues, and proposed solutions.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
- A Master’s degree or specialization in Steel Structures or Structural Engineering is a plus.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in civil engineering with a focus on steel structure design, analysis, and construction.
- Hands-on experience with the design, fabrication, and erection of steel structures, particularly in renovation and maintenance projects.
- Proven experience with structural design software such as STAAD Pro, AutoCAD, Tekla, and Revit.
- Knowledge of local (UAE) building codes, as well as international standards (e.g., Eurocodes, AISC).
- Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of steel materials, welding processes, bolted and welded connections, and fabrication techniques.
- Ability to interpret structural drawings and create detailed design documents.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong project management and coordination skills.
- Good knowledge of structural load analysis, material properties, and safety regulations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Language Skills:
- Proficiency in English (both written and verbal) is required. Knowledge of Arabic is an advantage but not mandatory.
