Civil Engineer 5-Transit Site/Civil

  • Under general direction, the Civil Engineer develops and oversees engineering designs ranging from basic to highly complex site/civil projects.
  • Responsibilities include preparing and reviewing civil design packages involving site layout and land development, site grading and drainage, hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) analyses, stormwater management systems, water distribution networks, sanitary and storm collection systems, storage tanks and impoundments, foundation design, and related site infrastructure. Work may also include design support for small single-story structures.
  • The Civil Engineer reviews design documents to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, as well as company standards and best practices.
  • The role may include performing on-site reviews and field assessments to confirm design feasibility and alignment with existing conditions.
  • The engineer is responsible for updating design criteria as necessary to reflect project-specific or regulatory changes.
  • The position collaborates closely with project managers and business development staff to support proposal development in response to client RFPs. This includes reviewing proposal content for compliance with technical standards and regulatory requirements.
  • The engineer also participates in client meetings to discuss current and future project needs and may represent the firm at conferences and industry events to enhance visibility of services.
  • Additional responsibilities include providing technical guidance, training, and mentorship to junior staff.
  • The Civil Engineer may also supervise junior engineers and designers on project tasks and contributes to their professional growth within the discipline.
  • Other duties may be assigned as required to support project and firm objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional engineering (PE) license.
  • 7 years of related experience.

  • Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Certification/License Requirements

Professional Engineer

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience producing complete PS&E / construction drawing packages, including:
Plan, profile, typical sections, details
  • Utility coordination drawings
  • Signing & striping, ADA ramp details, and staging plans
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, including:
Surfaces, corridors, alignments, pipe networks, grading objects
  • Efficient model-based plan production and sheet set management
  • Strong experience developing engineer’s cost estimates (OPCC, PS&E level) and technical specifications
  • Familiarity with state DOT and municipal design standards, with ability to quickly adapt to new agency criteria
  • Experience supporting projects through design development, QA/QC, and agency review cycles
  • Experience in site civil design, including:
Grading, drainage, stormwater management, and utility layout
  • Pavement design, curb and gutter, and earthwork calculations
  • Advanced Civil 3D capabilities in:
Complex grading scenarios
Pipe networks and stormwater modeling coordination
Efficient corridor and surface management
  • Experience developing site-specific construction details, erosion control plans, and stormwater BMPs
  • Familiarity with TDOT, municipal, and utility provider standards for permitting and design
  • Experience preparing bid-ready construction packages and responding to contractor questions during procurement

  • Ability to mentor junior staff on Civil 3D best practices and drawing standards.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal oversight while coordinating across disciplines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including coordination with planners, architects, utility owners, and agency staff.
